Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni is on a visit to China. Meloni held a meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang on Sunday. During this, she signed a three-year action plan with China. This is Meloni’s first visit to China after becoming the Prime Minister of Italy in 2022. Her visit is for five days.

Meloni’s visit is being linked to bringing Italy-China relations back on track. It is being said that Meloni is trying to re-establish relations with China. Meloni said that the cooperation memorandum signed between Italy and China includes industrial sectors like electric mobility and renewables.

In a meeting with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang, Meloni said that we have a lot of work to do and I believe that this work is important not only at the global level but also at the multilateral level.

Meloni often sees Chinese investment as Italy’s economic weakness. Last year, Italy pulled out of China’s BRI project. Due to this, the relations between Italy and China became a little sour. But now Meloni’s visit is being seen as an attempt to bring the relations between the two countries back on track.

Also participated in business forum

He also participated in the Italy-China Business Forum on Sunday, in which many Italian companies including tyre company Pirelli, energy group ENI, defence group Leonardo, wine producers were also invited.

Meloni said that this shows our common interests. Meanwhile, Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang said that Italy and China should adopt a win-win mentality and increase trade and investment cooperation, so that the relationship becomes even more sustainable.

Will there be a comeback in BRI?

In 2019, Italy joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). At that time, Italy was the only country in the G-7 to join the BRI. However, Italy pulled out of it last year under US pressure. Meloni’s government had said that Italy did not benefit from this.

China’s state media said Meloni’s visit was aimed at clarifying some misunderstandings over Italy’s return to the BRI and stressing the importance of economic ties.

Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni arrived in China on Saturday. Meloni will also meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday. After this, she will also hold a meeting with Zhao Leji, who is considered number three in the Chinese government.
