As soon as we hear the song ‘Aajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche…’, Mumtaz’s name comes to our mind. The actress worked with many big heroes in her three decade long career, her most hit pairing was with Rajesh Khanna. Recalling her experience, the actress told how in those days directors and producers only listened to the heroes. For them, anything said or any opinion given by a big hero was like a line etched in stone.
Mumtaz turned 77
Mumtaz is celebrating her 77th birthday today i.e. on 31st July. The actress spoke to Zoom on this occasion. She told that she is happier celebrating her sister Mallika’s birthday than her own. Because her birthday is often spent from studio to studio. Mumtaz believes in expressing her opinions openly. She told that she could never take leave on her birthday because only men were listened to in the industry then. She has been a part of an industry where only male co-actors were listened to.

The industry was run as per the wishes of the hero
Mumtaz said- In those days everything was decided as per the wish of the hero. Perhaps cake cutting for them would have taken place on the set. Whatever the hero wanted, the director and producer would follow it. I would just do my work and mostly keep to myself. I was so punctual that I would reach the studio at exactly 9 o’clock. People would adjust their watches when my car arrived.
There was no affair with Rajesh Khanna
Mumtaz also talked about Rajesh’s lateness and said- This is true. But we knew how to manage our schedules so that my time is not wasted. We were so in sync without any mood and schedule that people used to think that we were in a relationship. However, there was no affair between us. Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) was with Anju Mahendru in those years when we were working together. Anju was a very good friend of mine and still is. Kaka and I knew how to get our work done without discussing.
Why did you get married at the peak of your career?
At the peak of her career, Mumtaz said goodbye to it and married Mayur Madhvani. The reason for this was attributed to her conservative Iranian family and said – they felt that the film industry is a bad place, where there are people who are after me. They gave me an ultimatum that either I find my husband. Or they will do this for me. I married Mayur and I am very happy. Of course, I don’t get to meet him as much as I want. He keeps traveling constantly. I am happy with what we have. Daal roti is enough. But he doesn’t listen.
