Thousands of international students are out on the streets in Canada. These students are afraid of deportation due to the change in the Canadian government’s immigration policy. This is the reason why voices are being raised against this change in the Trudeau government’s policy.

The Canadian government has now decided not to give permits to foreign workers in areas where the unemployment rate is six percent or more. Permits for low-paying temporary jobs will now be issued for one year instead of two. This means that the number of immigrants in Canada will now be controlled.

Indian students feel cheated

A large number of Indian students study in Canada. Every year a large number of Indians go to Canada for higher education. But due to the change in policies of the Trudeau government, Indian students are feeling cheated. An Indian student studying in Canada, Mehakdeep Singh, said that I waited for six years to come to Canada. I studied here, am working, paying taxes but the Canadian government does not care about us at all.

Representatives of an organization advocating for student rights say more than 70,000 students face the risk of deportation because of a change in federal policy by the Trudeau government when their work permit visas expire at the end of this year.

In fact, the biggest impact of the change in the Trudeau government’s immigration policy will be seen on Indian students, who are studying there as well as doing temporary jobs. They fear that when their work permit expires at the end of this year, they will be deported.

Why do so many students move to Canada?

The reason for going to Canada is not just education. This is because student visa is an easy way to go to Canada, and after this the path to permanent residence and citizenship also opens up. Foreign citizens can easily enter Canada through student visa. Indians form a large number of foreign students in Canada. A kind of mini India has been settling in Canada.

According to the data of the Canadian government, out of a total of 5.5 lakh international students in the year 2022, 2.26 lakh students were from India. This is 40 percent of the total students. Earlier, 3.2 lakh Indian students were living in Canada on visa. A large number of these students are living in motels or basements.
