The aim of this campaign is to further strengthen tourism relations between India and Maldives. Earlier in May this year, the Tourism Minister of Maldives had appealed to Indian tourists to visit Maldives in maximum numbers.

The number of Indian tourists arriving in Maldives decreased by 42 percent

The number of Indian tourists visiting Maldives has declined sharply. This year between January and April, the number of Indian tourists visiting Maldives has declined by 42 percent compared to last year.

According to the report, Maldives was a very favourite destination for Indian tourists. But after the tension between the two countries increased, the number of Indian tourists visiting Maldives decreased. According to the data of the Ministry of Tourism, 42,638 Indian tourists visited Maldives between January and April this year. Whereas, last year in the same four months, 73,785 Indian tourists visited Maldives.

Decreased number of tourists?

The media has blamed the Muizzu government for the India-Maldives tension and the decline in the number of Indian tourists. Mohammad Muizzu became the President of Maldives in November last year. Since then, there has been tension in the relations between India and Maldives. Muizzu is considered a supporter of China. He gave the slogan ‘India Out’ in his election campaign. After coming to power, Muizzu raised the issue of withdrawal of Indian soldiers present in Maldives. There were 88 Indian soldiers in Maldives. Now these soldiers are being called back.

How did the tension start between India and Maldives?

After Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, three ministers of the Maldives government made objectionable comments on some pictures of PM Modi’s visit. Since then, the diplomatic dispute between the two countries deepened. After the controversy over the matter escalated, these three ministers were suspended.

Amidst this tension between the two countries, Maldives President Muizzu went on a five-day state visit to China. After returning from this visit, Muizzu continued to target India.

On his return to Maldives, Muizzu had said clearly that no one has the license to bully us. He had said that we may be a small country but that does not give anyone the license to bully us. However, Muizzu has not directly named anyone in this statement. But it is believed that his target is India.

After this, Muizzu had asked India to withdraw its troops from Maldives before March 15. Muizzu, who is considered pro-China, met President Xi Jinping during his five-day visit to China. His visit came at a time when three ministers of the Maldives government were suspended for making objectionable remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
