Nomcebo Zuma, the 21-year-old daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, is set to marry King Mswati III of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland) as his 16th wife.

According to reports, King Mswati recently sent a delegation of traditionalists to Zuma’s home in KwaZulu-Natal to present 10 cattle as part of the “kucela” customary practice, seeking permission to marry Nomcebo. However, Zuma was reportedly reluctant and did not attend the family meeting, feeling “betrayed” by his “friend” the king.

Despite Zuma’s reluctance, Nomcebo’s mother, MaMhlongo, was allegedly present at the meeting and expressed happiness about the proposed marriage, describing it as a “blessing.” Nomcebo has already moved to Eswatini and quit her final year of university studies in South Africa to complete her degree there.

The reports indicate that King Mswati had initially told Zuma that Nomcebo would marry one of his sons, but later changed his mind and decided to take her as his own wife. Mswati, an absolute monarch, currently has over 15 wives.

Zuma and King Mswati have a longstanding relationship, which included South Africa bailing out Eswatini with R2-billion in 2011 during Zuma’s presidency. Zuma also married Minah Shongwe from Eswatini, the sister of former Judge Jeremiah Shongwe.
