Which peace conference did Zelensky ask India to host? What is the benefit to the host country from organising an international event?

Recently, PM Narendra Modi visited Ukraine. During this time, many pictures of the cordial meeting of the leaders of the two countries went viral. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also offered India to host the next Peace Summit, which focuses on the Russia and Ukraine war. Know what this conference is, and why countries want to host such international events.

How is Ukraine’s Peace Summit different?

The full name of the conference that Zelensky was talking about is Peace Formula Summit. This is a completely new effort, whose aim is to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine. Let us tell you that it has been almost two and a half years since the war between the two countries. In November 2022, Ukrainian President Zelensky himself prepared the Peace Formula. He made 10 points and sought help from most of the countries of the world. Under this, things like removing the Russian army from Ukraine, repairing the destroyed infrastructure, controlling inflation caused by the war, giving all kinds of help to soldiers and their families are included.

90 countries participated

On the initiative of Zelensky, the first Peace Formula Summit was held in Switzerland in June 2024. Apart from 92 countries, 8 international NGOs also participated in it. India also participated in it.

Why Switzerland became the first host

Switzerland was chosen very carefully for the first summit. This country is known as the most neutral country in the world, where most bilateral treaties have been signed. Almost all the major international offices have their headquarters here because it is believed that the country will not interfere in anyone’s policy while remaining neutral. Almost all the countries are on one side or the other in the war between Russia and Ukraine. In such a situation, Switzerland was chosen very carefully.

What is the meaning of Zelensky’s proposal

Now Zelensky is taking India’s name for the next summit. This is also a big deal because the world knows about India-Russia relations. Apart from good relations with Putin, India also had good trade relations with Russia. India has always sided with peace during the war between Russia and Ukraine, but Zelensky’s statement only shows the country’s strong international image.

Now talking about the Global Peace Summit, it is a private initiative of an International Peace Building Institute, which started in the year 2018. It has no special political significance.

Why countries want to host international matches

Be it India, America or Saudi Arabia, almost all countries want to host some international event. It can be political, economic, cultural or even sports. There is always a competition to host sports related events. But hosting is a very difficult task in itself. The host country has to work a lot on it. Many preparations are made so that the guest countries do not face any problems.

A lot of money is spent in this whole exercise. Then why are countries so eager to organize events in their country?

There are many reasons for this

– International events attract visitors from all over the world. This is a big benefit to the tourism sector.

– Countries invest money on infrastructure such as roads, bridges, hotels to provide convenience to guests coming to the event. The benefits of this continue to accrue even after the event is over.

– Thousands of jobs are created during the preparations for hosting the event. Its benefits are seen on the common people as well as on the country’s GDP.

– International leaders and diplomats also visit the country where the event is being held. This builds relations between the countries. It opens doors for many deals.

Economic boost and increased political influence are the benefits that countries want to achieve. This is the reason why all countries keep putting their names forward for the Olympics and G20.

How is hosting decided?

There is a bidding process for this as well. Countries send their names to the organisers of the event. Expenses, infrastructure, security, everything is mentioned in it. For example, if we take the Olympics, interested countries send their proposal to the International Olympic Committee. The committee votes on this, in which one name is approved. However, many other factors work in this. For example, if a country has more political influence and is also financially strong, then the committee is inclined towards it.
