When senior Bollywood actress Dimple Kapadia’s first film ‘Bobby’ (1973) was released, she was only 16 years old. A year before the release of this film, she had married Bollywood superstar Rajesh Khanna, who was 30 years old then. Dimple, who became a star with her debut film, did not do films for years after ‘Bobby’ and at the age of 17, she had also become the mother of Twinkle Khanna.
A few years ago, Dimple had said that she was very ‘naive’ when she fell in love with Rajesh Khanna. She was so ‘filmy’ that she thought Rajesh Khanna was going to sing ‘Mere Sapno Ki Rani’ for her in the mountains.
Dimple’s filmy love
A few years ago, while talking at an event of FICCI’s ladies organization, Dimple had said, ‘Since I was a filmy kid, I thought Rajesh Khanna would sing ‘Mere Sapno Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu’ for me. He would take me to the mountains and sing the song.’ Dimple had laughingly said that when she met Rajesh Khanna, she was very young and was very much influenced by films.
Dimple had said, ‘I swear I am not lying, because I was so young. And I was so influenced by the films. So when we reached the mountains and there was no song, no wind, I was in a bad state. Because I really believed in all these things. I mean, how stupid can someone be? But I was.’
In the same conversation, when Dimple was asked what was her best role in life, she said, ‘Being Mrs. Rajesh Khanna was the best role of my life. This was my best role.’ Dimple and Rajesh were together for 8 years before separating from each other. They had two daughters – Twinkle and Rinke Khanna. However, both of them never got divorced.

In the same chat, Dimple also told her love story with Rajesh Khanna and said that they met a few days after signing ‘Bobby’. She was offered ‘Bobby’ when she was 13 years old. There was an age difference of 15 years between her and Rajesh Khanna. Dimple told that after she signed Raj Kapoor’s film, she and other celebrities were called to Ahmedabad for a function.
Rajesh was also on the same flight and both of them had seats together. Dimple said, ‘So he was sitting next to me. I cleverly told him, ‘There will be a lot of crowd there, you will hold my hand, right?’ He said – ‘Yes, of course.’ I said, ‘Forever?’… I was really very filmy and what happened after that is history.’
