What we know about the new ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie, as Ian McKellen says he’s set to return as Gandalf

Amazon’s “The Lord of the Rings” prequel TV series, “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” he may have Opponents — but it has helped revive interest in the multibillion-dollar franchise.

A renewed appetite for stories set in Middle-earth prompted Warner Bros. to announce earlier this year that two new movies are coming, one with a working title: “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.”

Here’s what we know so far.

“The Hunt for Gollum” is slated for release in 2026.

Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslev announced in an investor call in May that “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” will be released in 2026 and “explore storylines that have yet to be told,” Diversity informed.

Andy Serkiswho played Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, will reprise his role and also direct the new film. Presumably, the movie will be a prequel since Gollum died at the end of 2003’s “The Return of the King.”

In a statement released in May, Serkis expressed his excitement about the project, noting that “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit“The triangle, Peter JacksonWill produce the film with his writing partners, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boynes.

“Yes, precious. It’s time once again to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth, Peter, Fran and Philippa,” Serkis wrote. “With Mike and Pam, and the Warner Bros. team, along with WETA and our filmmaking family in New Zealand, it’s been delicious…”

Ian McKellen said he is in talks to return to play Gandalf.

McKellen said in the September edition Big issue That he had talks about returning to play Gandalf in “The Hunt for Gollum”.

The 85-year-old actor played the iconic wizard in the original trilogy from 2001 to 2003, and then returned to the role a decade later in 2013 for the prequel trilogy, “The Hobbit.”

“The enthusiasm for ‘The Lord of the Rings’ shows no sign of abating … I can’t tell you much more than that. I’ve just been told that there are going to be more movies and Gandalf will be involved and they hope That I will play that role,” he said.

The actor pointed out that the film is still in the early stages of development, so it is uncertain what it is about.

“When? I don’t know. What is a script? It hasn’t been written yet. So, they better hurry,” McKellen said. It looks like Middle-earth fans will have to be patient to learn more about “The Hunt for Gollum.”
