India-Israel Defence Relations

Israel is India’s fourth largest defence partner. India’s defence ties with Israel go back before the establishment of formal relations. During the Indo-Pakistani wars of 1971 and 1999, Israel provided arms, ammunition and intelligence to India. Apart from defence, the two countries cooperated in areas such as intelligence, agriculture and science.

India is now one of the largest buyers of Israeli arms. The figures change every year but in 2017 Israel was India’s largest arms supplier and has been one of the top exporters since then.

India has leased four Israeli-made Heron Mark-2 drones. These drones patrol India’s borders. These Israeli drones can also carry weapons if needed. Other Israeli equipment used to detect infiltration includes handheld thermal imaging devices and night vision equipment.

Apart from this, an Israeli company Elbit Systems has signed an agreement with Pune-based Bharat Forge to manufacture artillery guns, ammunition and mortar systems. India and Israel have also jointly developed the Barak-8 air and missile defense system.
