In a dramatic incident off the coast of New Hampshire, a whale capsized a fishing boat after breaching the water and landing directly on the vessel[1][3][4][5]. The dramatic event, which occurred near Rye State Park, was captured on video by nearby teenagers Colin and Wyatt Yager.
The video shows the massive whale leaping out of the water and crashing down onto the back of the 23-foot boat, sending the two men onboard flying into the Atlantic Ocean. The men, identified as Greg Paquette and Ryland Kenney, were fishing when the sudden encounter occurred.
“Thankfully it was slow enough that I could kind of swim my way out away from it before it completely capsized,” Paquette said[5]. However, it took Kenney several frantic moments to locate Paquette in the water.
Fortunately, the Yager brothers were nearby and quickly came to the rescue of the two boaters. The U.S. Coast Guard, who responded to the incident, praised the quick actions of the good Samaritans, stating, “We appreciate the quick response of the good Samaritans who helped rescue these two individuals. Bravo Zulu!”

The Coast Guard confirmed that the whale appeared to have sustained no injuries, and the boat was successfully retrieved. The incident was reported to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
“This is their home. This is their ocean, so we’re in their way,” Kenney said, reflecting on the encounter. The Coast Guard has urged boaters to report whale sightings to local command centers to promote safety on the water.
