Woman beaten up in West Bengal, West Bengal Governor C.V. Anand Bose, who was scheduled to visit Chopra in North Dinajpur district to meet the victims of the thrashing of a couple, cancelled his visit to the town. Governor Bose went to Cooch Behar after arriving from New Delhi on Tuesday morning and met other alleged victims of atrocities.
What did the officials say?
Officials said the couple who were brutally beaten up by local Trinamool Congress leader Tajmul Islam in Chopra did not turn up for the meeting. “The victims of the Chopra beating incident did not turn up for the meeting. The governor met victims of other atrocities,” an official told Hindi news agency Bhasha.
He said the governor was to submit a report based on his findings to the central government. The people who met him expressed their desire to meet the governor at the Raj Bhawan’s ‘Shanti Kaksha’ and seek justice. Earlier in the day, Bose arrived in Bagdogra from New Delhi and left directly for Cooch Behar, where these people were waiting for him.
What is the whole matter?
Bose on Monday sought a report from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the thrashing of a couple. There was a lot of outrage after the video of the incident, which took place on Friday, surfaced on social media. The TMC leader was arrested on Sunday afternoon in connection with the incident. He has been charged with attempt to murder, assault with intent to outrage the modesty of a woman and intentionally causing grievous hurt.
The man seen in the video beating the couple with a bamboo stick has been identified as Tajamul alias ‘JCB’. The couple was accused of having an illicit relationship by a ‘kangaroo court’.
TMC leader was arrested
Islam has a criminal history that includes a murder case. On Monday, a local court in North Dinajpur district sent him to five-day police custody. “Islam is a notorious criminal of the area who has a history of criminal activities. He was previously involved in a murder case in Chopra in 2021,” an IPS officer told Bhasha.
Islam is known to have close ties with Chopra MLA Hamidul Rehman. He was arrested for his alleged involvement in the murder of CPI(M) leader Mansoor Naimul just before the panchayat elections in 2023.
