compensation for Agniveer Soldier: The family of an Agniveer from Maharashtra who lost his life while performing his duty last year has said that they have received a compensation of Rs 1.08 crore from the government. The family’s statement came after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s statement on Monday in which he said that the family of an Agniveer who gives up his life while performing his duty gets a compensation of Rs 1 crore. Referring to the Agneepath scheme for recruitment in the Army, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had claimed that the government treats Agniveers as disposable labourers and does not even give them the status of a martyr.

On this, the Defense Minister had said that the family of Agniveer who sacrifices his life while performing his duty gets a compensation of Rs 1 crore. Agniveer Akshay Gavte, a native of Pimpalgaon Sarai in Buldhana district of Maharashtra, died while performing his duty in Siachen on 21 October 2023. Akshay’s father Laxman Gavte told reporters on Monday evening that after Akshay’s death, the family got Rs 48 lakh as insurance cover, Rs 50 lakh from the central government and Rs 10 lakh from the state government.

He also demanded a government job for Akshay’s sister. He said this while responding to questions asked by reporters regarding the compensation received after his son’s death. The Agneepath scheme was announced on June 14, 2022. It provided for the recruitment of youth in the age group of 17 to 21 years in the army for only four years, out of which 25 percent has a provision to be retained for a further 15 more years. The government later increased the upper age limit to 23 years.
