He said, “We never wanted Indians in our army. There are only 50-60 people in the army and it does not matter. That too they have been recruited in the army by taking them to Russia on tourist visas by deceiving them by criminal elements. We are with India in this matter. This should be resolved as soon as possible and action should be taken after investigation in both the countries.” Asked whether the soldiers would get compensation and citizenship (for families in case of death), he said Russia would fulfill “contractual obligations”. He added: “We are honest with everyone.”

Citing recent reports of Russian missile attacks on a children’s hospital in Kiev that killed 20 people, he said this was a “false picture” because it was a Ukrainian anti-missile missile that hit the hospital. He said the weapon was supplied by Norway.

He described the war with Ukraine as a war “not between Russia and Ukraine but between Russia and the West.” He said Ukraine should be non-aligned, non-nuclear and neutral and called the recent peace conference in Switzerland, at which Russia was not present, a “farce.”

Babushkin said Russia appreciates India’s position on the war and added that it is in Russia’s national interest and that Western countries have provided arms worth $200 billion to Ukraine. He said India has a clear understanding of the origins of the conflict and there was an in-depth discussion on Ukraine between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
