‘We are not getting any relief because we are Hindus…’, video of flood-affected Bangladeshi Hindus goes viral

The recent protests in Bangladesh led to the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power. After this incident, the entire political scenario in the neighboring country has changed. During this time, cases of atrocities and attacks on minority Hindus were also seen in Bangladesh, including attacks on temples and looting of properties of the Hindu community. The situation has become even worse for the minorities after the interim government was accused of ignoring them during rescue and relief operations in the flood-affected areas of Bangladesh. Many districts in India’s neighboring country are badly affected due to floods.

Relief and rescue operations are being carried out by the army, local police and many organizations. However, a video has gone viral on social media platforms in Bangladesh, in which a person from the Hindu community is accusing the administration of negligence and biased attitude during rescue and relief operations in Hindu-dominated areas.

In the video, a person is telling about his area, which is Cheoria, Tulabaria in Ward No. 8 of Kalidah Union in Feni district of Bangladesh. He said, we have not got a single person for relief. Our only crime is that we are Hindus. On that side, people of Noakhali and Barisal are getting relief, but on seeing us, they are going away, not coming to this side. We are not associated with any party, but our crime is only of being Hindus. The person seen in the video says that our only fault is that we are Hindus.

Several members of the Hindu community told India Today that they have also received reports from many areas where Hindus are not being helped and instead many other temples are giving shelter to Hindu families and distributing relief materials in the worst flood-affected areas.
Many local Hindu community organizations from different districts across India are also on the ground, engaged in rescue and relief work and distributing relief materials through boards and other means.

Ban on Jamaat-e-Islami lifted
After the formation of the interim government in Bangladesh, many decisions of the old government have been reversed. One of these decisions is the lifting of the ban on the Jamaat-e-Islami party. Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had banned it during nationwide protests against her rule. The Hasina government had banned the party, calling it a ‘militant and terrorist’ organization and blamed its student wing and other affiliated organizations for instigating agitation over the reservation system in government jobs.

According to UN estimates, more than 600 people were killed in violent protests and the Hasina government’s crackdown. The Home Ministry on Wednesday lifted the ban on the party, paving the way for it to resume its activities. To contest elections, it will have to register with the Election Commission.

There was no immediate reaction from the party leadership. Jamaat-e-Islami has been barred from participating in elections since 2013, when the commission cancelled its registration and the High Court upheld this decision. The court had said in its order that the party had violated the Constitution by opposing secularism.

Bangladesh Legal Advisor Asif Nazrul said that the ban by the Hasina government was politically motivated and not based on any ideology. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, general secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party led by Hasina’s rival former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, also blamed the previous government for the ban.
