Vedaa Review: The story of people oppressed in the name of caste, John Abraham-Sharvari’s ‘Vedaa’ impresses

Today it has been 78 years since our country got independence. But caste is such a thing, whose soot is still darkening the lives of a large section of the people. The calculation of us being big and you being small is still going on in different places. Here the people of ‘upper’ caste are ruling over the Dalits. Even today many people are living in our world suppressing the fear of violation of their human rights, fear of not being able to breathe freely and the annoyance of not getting opportunities. John Abraham and Sharvari have brought their story in the film ‘Veda.

What is the story of the film?

The film begins in POK where Major Abhimanyu Kanwar (John Abraham) is on a mission. He loses his job because he disobeys his captain’s orders. Then you are shown why Abhimanyu did what he did. Abhimanyu, who lost his wife to terrorists, reaches Barmer to fulfill a promise he made to his wife. Barmer has a different system. Veda Berwa (Sharvari) lives here with her family.

Because she is a Dalit, Veda is not allowed to drink water from a water cooler. She is forced to drink water from a pot. If that water runs out, forget about the water. In her daily life, Veda sees people from her community losing their lives. People are killed in front of her eyes. Girls from their homes are kidnapped and she is not even allowed to raise her head. Veda wants to learn boxing, but the brother of the village Pradhan (Kshitij Chauhan) crushes this desire of hers in a very painful way. Pradhan Jitendra Pratap Singh (Abhishek Banerjee) has the responsibility of 150 districts, but he dispenses justice only keeping in mind the people of his caste.

A ‘mistake’ by Veda’s brother Vinod (Anurag Thakur) is going to make life difficult for his entire family. To avoid this, Veda, her sister Gehna (Tanvi Malhar), her father (Rajendra Chawla) will have to risk their lives. Veda wants to breathe freely and Major Abhimanyu does not like the things happening around him while living in Barmer. In such a situation, both of them become an important part of each other’s life. Both will teach each other some new and important things. Will Veda be able to break the shackles of society? What will be the role of Major Abhimanyu Kanwar in Veda’s story? This is what is to be seen in the film.

How is the movie?

Director Nikhil Advani has made this film. It is made clear at the beginning of the movie that it has nothing to do with any living or dead person. The story of the film is taken from real life people, but it has been shown as a dramatic adaptation. Nikhil has tried to make ‘Veda’ with a sensitive approach. The people who are facing exploitation due to caste in the society, their feeling of being suffocated, their frustration, the fear in their mind, is visible in the characters of the film. Amidst all this, the tension between the characters of Pradhan and Abhimanyu is very intense.

The first half of the film is good. You enter the life of Veda who jumps around and stares at people. But this story becomes very real and dark very soon. An attempt has been made to keep the story tight in the second half as well. However, its climax is a bit scattered. The bloody battle between Major Abhimanyu, Veda and Pradhan Jitendra Pratap Singh definitely keeps you engaged.

Performance

John Abraham is amazing in the role of no-nonsense Major Abhimanyu Kanwar. It is impossible to talk about John and not talk about his action. The actor’s action, his stunts are amazing. John also makes you emotional with this film. Sharvari has played the character of Veda very well. Sharvari has portrayed the fire in Veda’s eyes and the anger in her heart very well on screen. Abhishek Banerjee is very good in the role of Jitendra Pratap Singh. You will see him doing comedy in ‘Stree 2’. In such a situation, you will definitely be surprised to see his work in ‘Veda’.

One character that makes you want to slap him is Pradhan’s brother. This tells how well actor Kshitij Chauhan has played his character. He has played a cruel boy who cannot compromise his narrow thinking even for a moment. Kshitij has done complete justice to this character. Ashish Vidyarthi, Danish Hussain, Kumud Mishra, Tamannaah Bhatia, Anurag Thakur and Tanya Malhar have played their roles well. Everyone has added a different layer to their characters. The music of the film is also good. You can definitely give it a chance.
