UP: Woman lawyer in Bareilly attempted self immolation in SSP office, was angry over no action being taken against harassment

In Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly, a woman lawyer tried to commit suicide in the premises of SSP office after which people present there saved her. Officials said that the woman lawyer was angry as no action was taken on the complaint of harassment.

According to the news agency, an official said that the woman poured flammable substance on her body in the office premises and tried to set herself on fire. He said that the policemen deployed there came into action and stopped her.

CO Pankaj Srivastava said, ‘The woman lawyer has been identified as Shabin Bi, a resident of Mirganj police station area. She had alleged that she and her sisters were being harassed by the village head.’ The officer said that the matter is being investigated.

Gram Pradhan accused of harassment

Anchal Khan, the sister of the woman lawyer who tried to commit self-immolation, said that the victim had complained about the actions of the village head to many government departments. Anchal Khan said, ‘Angered by this, the village head and his brother used to make indecent comments against me and my sisters.’

She alleged that they reported the incident to the local police station but to no avail. Khan said, ‘Instead of taking action against the accused, the local police have filed a false case against my sister. He said, ‘This injustice forced my sister to take this fatal step.
