United Nations will investigate the killings in Bangladesh, will soon send a fact finding team

After the coup in Bangladesh on August 5 and Sheikh Hasina leaving the country, the UN has now taken a big step. The UN is going to set foot there for the first time since the formation of Bangladesh. In fact, a fact-finding team of UN experts will soon reach Bangladesh and investigate the killings that took place during the protests. Apart from this, the killings of protesters that took place in Bangladesh even before Sheikh Hasina’s resignation will also be investigated. This was announced on Thursday.

On August 8, a few days after the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the chief advisor of the interim government. Sheikh Hasina was ousted on August 5 amid violent protests over quota reforms for government jobs and had to leave the country. Bangladesh interim government chief Mohammad Yunus announced on his X handle that UN human rights chief Volker Turk called him on Wednesday. During this, Volker Turk said, a team of UN experts will soon visit the country to investigate the killings.

Bangladesh descended into chaos after Hasina left last week, while the military stepped in to fill the power vacuum on August 5. Earlier, more than 500 people were killed in anti-government protests since mid-July. Meanwhile, Turk assured his support and said an inclusive, human rights-focused approach would ensure that the transition was successful. Volker Turk gave this information in a post late Wednesday night.
