Ukraine Updates: IAEA chief visits Zaporizhzhya power plant

09/03/2024 September 3, 2024

UN nuclear watchdog chief to visit Zaporizhia plant and meet with Zelensky in Kiev

The President of Ukraine will meet with the Director of the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday.

Rafael Mariano Grossi posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was on his way to the plant to continue aid to avoid any nuclear accident.

Grossi will then travel to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev to meet with Zelensky, the Ukrainian leader said.

Grossi visits a nuclear plant after a fire breaks out at the plant.

According to the IAEA, there was no harm to nuclear safety at the time.

Zaporizhia is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and is under Russian control from 2022.

The plant has not produced any power for the past two years and all six of its reactors are in cold shutdown.

In a social media post, Zelensky said he did not see a safe way to regain control of a nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.

“It is safer for Ukraine to control the Zaporizhia plant, but so far, from a war point of view, I do not see such possibilities, and those that may exist, are dangerous,” he said.
