Ukraine’s military commander has said that his army has taken control of about 1,000 square kilometers of territory in Russia’s Kursk region. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also confirmed for the first time on Monday that Ukrainian troops are on an operation in Russia’s Kursk region. Zelensky said this in a post on Telegram, praising the country’s soldiers and commanders ‘for their firmness and decisive action’.
He did not say anything more about the operation of his troops in Russian territory. He also said that Ukraine will provide humanitarian aid in this area. Zelensky said that government officials have been instructed to prepare a humanitarian plan for this area.
The control in the Kursk region was revealed in a video posted on Ukrainian President Zelensky’s Telegram channel on Monday, in which the military chief briefed the president on the situation on the front lines.
This is the first time a Ukrainian military official has publicly commented on the advance in this war. General Oleksandr Sirsky said in the video, “The soldiers are carrying out their tasks. Fighting continues along the entire front line. The situation is under our control.”
On the other hand, the Russian Defense Ministry said that it is sending more forces and weapons to Kursk, where Ukrainian soldiers are crossing the border and entering Russian territory. According to Russia’s Sted Media, the Defense Ministry sent BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launchers, artillery, tanks and military trucks to Sudzhansky in Kursk. It appears that Ukraine surprised Russian troops by attacking in this area.
‘Russia must feel the consequences of the war’
The fighting in Kursk has gradually moved closer to the nuclear power plant, prompting the UN nuclear agency to issue a statement urging both sides to “exercise maximum restraint”. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi has appealed to both sides to take measures “to avoid a nuclear accident with the potential for serious radiological consequences”. Ukraine has not openly acknowledged the intrusion, but President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement that Russia should also “feel” the consequences of its attack.
