Typhoon Yagi hits Vietnam, deaths reported in China

Powerful typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam on Saturday, killing two people and injuring 92 others.

In Vietnam, the super typhoon had sustained winds exceeding 149 km/h (92 mph), state media reported, uprooting thousands of trees and driving ships and boats out to sea.

“The typhoon hit Henan with heavy rain and strong winds, killing at least two people and injuring 92,” China’s state news agency Xinhua quoted local officials as saying.

How has Yagi affected Hainan?

At about 234 km/h (145 mph) near its center when it made landfall, it uprooted trees and flooded roads. It left more than 800,000 homes without power.

About 420,000 Henan residents were evacuated before the typhoon reached the Chinese coast.

Yagi paralyzed the island of more than 10 million people on Saturday, as all public transport links remained down. State broadcaster CCTV reported that the tourist island’s main airport in Haikou remained closed until 3pm (0700 GMT) on Saturday.

Other parts of China, Vietnam expect Yagi

In neighboring Guangdong province, more than 574,000 residents were evacuated before the typhoon made a second landfall in the province’s Xuwen County on Friday night.

More than 270 people sought refuge in temporary government shelters in Hong Kong on Friday. More than 100 flights in the city were also canceled due to Yagi.

On Saturday, as the typhoon moved further away from Haikou, the city’s meteorological observatory downgraded its typhoon signal from red to orange.

Chinese meteorological authorities said the storm had weakened slightly from a Category 4 to a Category 3 typhoon, reaching speeds of 187 kph (116 mph).

It made landfall in Hai Phong and Quang Ninh provinces on Saturday afternoon (local time). The typhoon’s path may take it close to the UNESCO heritage site Halong Bay and the Gulf of Tonkin.

Before landfall, Vietnamese authorities described Yagi as “the most powerful typhoon in the region in the past decade”.
