‘Trying to create Bangladesh’, Mamata Banerjee attacks opposition over Kolkata rape and murder

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused political parties of doing cheap politics in the case of murder of a lady doctor after brutality. Mamata said that instead of standing with the lady doctor’s family, CPI (M) and BJP are doing cheap politics. They think they can create Bangladesh here, but let me tell you, I am not greedy for power.

Countering those who criticised the Mamata government in this case, CM Mamata said that she monitored the case all night and as soon as she came to know about the crime, she spoke to the Police Commissioner and the victim’s parents. Mamata Banerjee asked, did we not take action?

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said what did we not do? Did we not take action? Mamata Banerjee said that I told the victim’s parents that the rapist will be hanged and I stand by it.

The West Bengal Chief Minister said that I kept monitoring the case all night, I was in touch with the police till the victim’s funeral. The police arrested the accused within 12 hours. She praised the Kolkata Police and said that the investigation was started quickly and the first arrest was made within 12 hours. She said that police officers took the victim’s body and several intensive investigations were done including DNA test, CCTV footage, sample testing.

What did Mamata say on handing over the case to CBI?

Mamata said that after the Calcutta High Court intervened in the case, the case was handed over to the CBI on Tuesday. Any investigation needs time, I had set a deadline till Sunday, because without proper investigation, action cannot be taken against anyone. She said that I respect both senior and junior doctors, I cannot arrest anyone without proper investigation.

Talking about the central agency taking over the investigation, Mamata Banerjee said that we will fully follow the High Court’s guidelines and we are cooperating with the CBI. The West Bengal Chief Minister said that ‘the police had already summoned 34 people and there were more people in the list, but the High Court intervened and handed over the case to the CBI.
