Tragic Hot Car Death: Father Charged with Murder After Leaving 2-Year-Old Daughter in 109°F Heat

Chris Scholtes, a 37-year-old father, has been charged with second-degree murder and child abuse after his 2-year-old daughter died from being left in a hot car for approximately 3 hours in Marana, Arizona.

According to the police, Scholtes arrived home on Tuesday, July 9th with his daughter still asleep in the car. He left the car running with the air conditioning on, but then went inside the house, leaving the child unattended. When the child’s mother arrived home later, the car was no longer running and the air conditioning was off. The 2-year-old girl was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police obtained surveillance footage that showed the child had been in the car for around 3 hours, during which time the temperature in Marana reached a scorching 111°F. Authorities stated that under Arizona law, Scholtes can be charged with second-degree murder “if, without premeditation, the person knowingly causes the death of another person” or “recklessly engages in conduct that creates a grave risk of death and thereby causes the death of another person.”

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, even with the air conditioning running. According to the nonprofit KidsAndCars.org, at least 10 children have died in hot cars in the U.S. so far this year, and since 1990, at least 1,094 children have died in similar circumstances, with about 88% of the victims being 3 years old or younger.
