On July 12, 2024, a devastating landslide swept away two buses in Nepal, leaving at least 65 people missing, including 7 Indian nationals.

The incident occurred on the Narayangadh-Muglin road section in the Chitwan district of Nepal. Two buses – an Angel bus heading to Kathmandu and a Ganpati Deluxe bus traveling from the capital to Gaur – were caught in the landslide and pushed into the swollen Trishuli River.

According to the authorities, 24 people were on board the Kathmandu-bound bus, while 41 were traveling on the Gaur-bound bus. Tragically, only three passengers from the Ganpati Deluxe bus managed to escape by jumping out of the vehicle before it was swept away.

The missing Indian nationals have been identified as Santosh Thakur, Surendra Sah, Adit Miyaan, Sunil, Shahnawaj Alam, and Ansari. Another Indian person’s identity has not been confirmed.

Rescue efforts are currently underway, with Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel deployed to the site. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has expressed grief over the incident and directed all government agencies to prioritize search and rescue operations.

This tragic event is the latest in a series of monsoon-related disasters that have plagued Nepal in recent years. Over the past decade, more than 1,800 people have lost their lives due to such calamities, with 400 going missing and over 1,500 injured.

The Narayangadh-Muglin road section, where the landslide occurred, has been obstructed by debris, further complicating the rescue efforts. Authorities are working to clear the debris and restore access to the area.

This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges Nepal faces in dealing with the devastating effects of natural disasters, particularly during the monsoon season. As the search for the missing continues, the nation mourns the loss of life and property, and the families of the victims await news of their loved ones.
