Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old who allegedly shot at former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, was previously rejected from his high school’s rifle team for being a poor marksman.
According to Crooks’ former classmate Jameson Myers, Crooks tried to join the high school’s rifle team but was “rejected and asked not to come back after a ‘pre-season’ session” because “he was considered dangerous” due to how “bad of a shot he was.”

Another anonymous member of the rifle team told ABC News that Crooks “wasn’t really fit for the rifle team” and “shot terrible.” The school district later confirmed that Crooks “never appeared on a roster” for the rifle team.
Despite being rejected from the high school rifle team, Crooks was reportedly a member of a local shooting club called the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club. However, his classmate described him as a “loner” who was “more socially reserved” and “didn’t have a ton of friends.”
Crooks, armed with an AR-style rifle, allegedly fired from the rooftop of a building about 140 meters from the stage where Trump was speaking, grazing the former president’s ear. He was then shot and killed by Secret Service agents at the scene.
