‘This is the climax of the wrestler protest’, said former CM Khattar on Bajrang-Vinesh’s meeting with Rahul Gandhi

BJP MP and Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday reacted to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with Olympians Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, saying it proves that the wrestlers’ protest last year was politically motivated.

Speaking to news agency ANI, former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said, “I think our athletes got caught in a political maze during their protest. What started then is now reaching its climax. The wrestlers’ protest was politically motivated. These people (wrestlers) want tickets from the Congress. This means everything happened as part of a conspiracy. If it was not clear then, it is absolutely clear now.”

Bajrang-Vinesh had opened a front against Brij Bhushan

Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat were among the wrestlers who started a protest against former BJP MP and then head of Wrestling Federation of India Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh early last year. They accused Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh of harassing several young wrestlers and sexually abusing some female wrestlers. Delhi Police had registered an FIR against Brij Bhushan on the complaint of the wrestlers. At present, this matter is pending in the court.

Bajrang-Vinesh likely to contest assembly elections

Earlier in the day, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi posted a photo of his meeting with Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia on social media, fuelling speculation of these wrestlers entering politics ahead of the Haryana assembly elections. There is speculation that Vinesh Phogat, originally from Charkhi Dadri, may consider contesting elections from her hometown.

Bajrang Punia also met Congress General Secretary Venugopal

However, given her family ties and influence, Julana constituency of Jind district may be a more likely option for Vinesh. According to sources, meanwhile Bajrang Punia also discussed with Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal. He too can try his luck on a Congress ticket in the Haryana Assembly elections.
