For the last two years, the existence of the place was in danger due to landslides. Many other newspapers and electronic media including Aaj Tak prominently covered the news that if permanent treatment is not done on time, the world famous tourist spot Tiffin Top located in Nainital will cease to exist and finally yesterday (6 August) at 11 pm, amid heavy rains, this Dorothy Seat collapsed due to landslide.

Dorothy Seat, located at Tiffin Top, a popular tourist spot in Nainital, became history after a landslide last night. Around 11 pm, a huge boulder fell down from Tiffin Top. There was no loss of life or property as the area is not inhabited. Every year, lakhs of tourists and local citizens visit Tiffin Top and enjoy the beautiful views of nature from that place.

Colonel Kellett built Dorothy Seat in memory of his wife

Dorothy’s Seat on Tiffin Top was built by Colonel Kellett, a British army officer, in memory of his wife Dorothy Kelly, who died of septicemia on the ship while going to England. She used to sit at this place and paint when she was in Nainital. Dorothy was an English painter. Dorothy died in 1936 during a sea voyage.

At 11 pm on Tuesday night, the news of landslide at Dorothy Seat created panic in the entire Nainital. Employees of the shops located there reported that the platform built there has been destroyed due to the landslide. An atmosphere of fear has been created due to the falling of big stones in the area. However, in the last few years, the area of ​​Dorothy Seat has been a victim of natural disasters. Incidents of landslides have increased here during the rainy season. The administration has inspected several times and taken protective measures and banned the movement of tourists, but despite these measures the situation did not improve.

The tall deodar and baja trees make this place picturesque and the cool breeze soothes the heart. The British were so impressed by this place which offered a wonderful view of Nainital along with being the top of the mountain that they made it a picnic spot by climbing a steep 4 kms hill at the end of the city and named it Tiffin Top. According to historians, Dorothy Kelly, an English woman who did painting, loved this place immensely. She would often climb high to reach Tiffin Top and sit there and sketch beauty on paper.
