‘There were 35 students in the library, the water was so dirty that…’, the story of the student who escaped from the basement of the coaching centre

A tragic incident took place on Saturday at Rao IAS Coaching Centre in Old Rajendra Nagar, Delhi. Two girl students died after water filled in the basement of the coaching centre after rain, while one student is still missing. An eyewitness to the incident said that around 30-35 students were sitting in the library. The library closes at 7 in the evening, so as soon as we came out of the library, there was a lot of pressure coming from the front. By the time we vacated the library, the water had filled up to our knees.

The eyewitness student said that the flow of water was so fast that we were not able to climb the stairs. Within 2-3 minutes, the entire basement was filled with 10-12 feet of water. Ropes were thrown to get out from there, but the water was so dirty that nothing was visible. Children were being taken out one by one from there. The eyewitness said that there were 2 more girls behind me. Who could not get out.

The eyewitness said that this incident happened at 7 pm. Waterlogging has happened here earlier also, about a week ago, there was waterlogging here, so we were stopped upstairs. The condition of waterlogging is such that many times our classes are cancelled, water remains filled for 2 to 2.5 hours. Last time when we were taking classes, we were not allowed to go to the basement at around 10 am, cars of many students were floating. The eyewitness said that when the rope was thrown, luckily it came in my hand, I was pulled out, a girl was holding my leg.

At the same time, the fire chief officer said that we received a call at 7 pm that the coaching center is flooded and some children are trapped in it. 5 vehicles have been sent to the spot, we were removing water from the basement, but the water was going back into the basement. As soon as the water level decreased a little, the body of a girl was taken out. We had received information that 2 to 3 students were trapped. This is rain and drain water.

Delhi government minister Atishi said that there is news of water filling in the basement of a coaching institute in Rajendra Nagar, Delhi Fire Brigade and NDRF teams are doing rescue work on the spot. Atishi said that Delhi Mayor Shaili Oberoi and local MLA are present at the spot. I am taking updates of the incident every minute, orders have been given for a magistrate inquiry into how this incident happened. Whoever is responsible for this incident will not be spared.
