‘… then you can be out of the House for a very long time’, why did the Chairman get angry at Surjewala in Rajya Sabha?

On Monday, the 11th day of the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, when Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan stood up to speak in the Rajya Sabha, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala started showing a paper. On this, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar got angry at him. Chairman Dhankhar asked him, Surjewala, why are you showing this paper. The Chairman interrupted Surjewala and said, why are you forcing me to name names. The Chairman told Surjewala that if you show the paper now, you may be out of the House for a very long time.

Surjewala sought permission to put this paper on the table of the House, citing his name being mentioned in the reply by the Agriculture Minister. Chairman Dhankhar said that I would expect your party’s leadership to provide you with a refresher course. You should read the rule book. He said that you do not want to listen to the farmers, you do not want to listen to the welfare of the farmers. After this, Shivraj started speaking. He started counting the figures of the firing incidents that took place during the Congress governments in the Center and the states and the farmers killed in these incidents.

Opposition members created a ruckus during Shivraj’s speech and walked out of the House. After the opposition walked out, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said that when there is a disruption from one side in the House, then disruption is also created from the other side without knowing the seating arrangement. He said that when there is a discussion on farmers, it is the fundamental duty of every member to participate seriously in the discussion. The Chairman said that during the discussion on the issue of farmers, we gave as much time to the member as he asked for.

He said that the interruption that was created is a disregard of the chair. This is a very serious matter. The Chairman said that Surjewala had started the discussion, I condemn the interruption that was created in the minister’s speech by ignoring the interests of the farmers. The members of the House will also be requested to make the discussion in the House meaningful. He said that the quality of the discussion is continuously declining. People are no longer looking at us with respect. People are no longer looking at what is being discussed.
