The truth before the brutality, lie detector and 53 proofs… Know what Sanjay Roy did that night?

Can someone commit a heinous crime like rape and murder and still remain carefree? Can the person whom the police is searching for drink alcohol and sleep peacefully in the police barracks even after knowing this? Can someone, on hearing that the police is searching for him, say “I will see” in a relaxed manner? The questions are strange, but the truth of Kolkata’s RG Kar rape case’s accused Sanjay Roy is something like this. When Kolkata Police arrested Sanjay Roy on 9 August, he was found sleeping in the barracks of the Fourth Battalion of Kolkata Police stationed in the hospital.

The way links of one crime after another got linked to Sanjay Roy before and after his arrest, not only revealed the truth of the crime but also Sanjay’s connection to it. His activities, which have come to light from CCTV cameras to mobile phone location, CDR and eyewitnesses, from the evening of 8 August to the night between 8 and 9 August, from killing the trainee doctor in the hospital to getting himself arrested the next day, are shocking. On receiving the news of the doctor’s murder on 9 August, Kolkata Police started investigating the case.

Kolkata Police first started to look into the CCTV footage of the hospital’s emergency building and the seminar hall. In this effort, they found at least 15 people around the seminar hall, whom the police questioned. Since none of these people had anything to do with the murder, they answered the police’s questions correctly and came out of the circle of suspicion. But there was one person who still had not come under the police’s radar, because after committing the crime, he went to sleep in the police barracks. That too in a drunken state.

Since by now the police had roughly ascertained the timing of the trainee doctor’s murder, they focused on the CCTV footage between 3 and 4 am on the night of 8 and 9 August. During this time, Sanjay Roy was seen around the seminar room in the footage. Now since Sanjay Roy was seen visiting a patient admitted in the same hospital in another CCTV footage, the police took a grab of Sanjay’s CCTV footage and showed it to a patient admitted in the hospital. This patient was none other than the brother of another civic volunteer Saurabh, who was admitted in the same hospital for some time.

When this brother was shown Sanjay Roy’s picture, he recognized him immediately and informed the police about him. Meanwhile, by evening, the postmortem of the trainee doctor who was the victim of the crime had been done and it was clear from the postmortem that the doctor died about 4 hours after dinner. Since the dinner time was around 12 o’clock, it was also clear that the doctor was murdered around 4 o’clock. Meanwhile, in the CCTV footage, Sanjay Roy was seen going towards the seminar hall at around 4 o’clock, so along with other evidence, the CCTV footage was also confirming that Sanjay was involved in this case. However, Sanjay had not come under the grip of the police till now. He was out of the grasp of the police till that time.

In the afternoon, Saurabh’s brother identified Sanjay Roy, but Saurabh still did not know that the police was looking for Sanjay. Meanwhile, he called Sanjay and invited him for lunch. Sanjay was still on his way when his brother informed him over the phone that the police was looking for Sanjay in connection with the rape and murder of a doctor in the seminar room of the hospital. Saurabh was stunned to hear this. However, when Sanjay arrived, Saurabh served him lunch and also told him that the police was looking for him in connection with the murder that took place in the hospital. But Saurabh was surprised to see that Sanjay simply avoided the topic by saying that he would look into it. After this, he did not eat food, but after reaching the barrack, he drank alcohol again.

After this he slept there again. When Kolkata police reached the police barracks looking for him, he was found sleeping there drunk. Immediately after his arrest, he not only confessed his crime, but also told the police, “Hang me…” But this was not just at the time of arrest, even the next day after his arrest, there was no remorse on Sanjay Roy’s face, rather he was confessing everything very comfortably during interrogation, explaining the entire sequence to the police. Meanwhile, the police also interrogated Sanjay’s friend Saurabh, who was with him the night before the incident.

Saurabh is also a civic volunteer like Sanjay. During interrogation, he told the police that on August 8, he had admitted his brother to RG Kar Hospital for treatment. He went to the hospital reception at 1:30 in the afternoon to get his brother admitted to the hospital. He inquired there and after his brother was admitted, he again reached the hospital at 10:30 in the night. Sanjay also came to Saurabh there. After this, both Saurabh and Sanjay left the patient in the hospital and went out and drank alcohol. After this, both of them first went to Sonagachi, the red light area in North Kolkata.

There Saurabh went inside a den, but Sanjay stood outside. Since Sanjay did not get a chance to go inside the den in Sonagachi, when Saurabh came out, both of them decided to go to another prostitution den in the city, Chetla. Chetla is in South Kolkata and its distance from Sonagachi is about 15 kilometers. On the night of 8th and 9th, both of them left Sonagachi and reached Chetla by bike, but here also Sanjay did not get a chance to go inside. Here also Sanjay’s friend Saurabh went inside the prostitution den, but Sanjay stood outside. It has become clear in the investigation that while standing there, Sanjay called his girlfriend that night and talked to her on video call. He also asked for some private pictures of his girlfriend.

Sanjay Roy failed to establish relations with anyone even after reaching the second prostitution centre. When the police questioned him in this regard, he said that he did not have money. However, the police did not believe his answer because they felt that by then he had started planning to commit a crime, so he did not establish relations with anyone even after reaching the prostitution centre. During interrogation, Saurabh told the police that he did not know how to drive a bike. So, despite being drunk that night, Sanjay kept driving the bike. When both of them reached near the hospital after roaming around two red light areas, Sanjay went towards the hospital instead of going towards the Fourth Battalion.

On this Saurabh asked him if he would not go towards the Fourth Battalion, he said that he would. It was around quarter to three in the night. Saurabh told that a road from RG Kar Hospital also goes towards the Fourth Battalion, so he thought that maybe Sanjay would take a detour and reach the Fourth Battalion through the same route. During interrogation Saurabh told the police that he did not know when Sanjay returned to the barracks after this. The next day at 10 am he had to go to his brother admitted in the hospital. For this when he reached the barracks to wake Sanjay, he was sleeping deeply.

Despite trying to wake him up twice, he did not wake up. Saurabh says that after this he went alone to the hospital and talked to the doctors there. After meeting the doctors on the afternoon of 9 August, Saurabh called Sanjay several times, but he did not pick up the phone. Actually he wanted to invite Sanjay to have lunch together. After this, by the time Sanjay reached Saurabh, he had already had lunch. Saurabh told him about the incident that happened in RG Kar and asked him to find out about it, because Sanjay knew many people. To this he said that he was checking.

If Saurabh is to be believed, then he left saying he was going to the toilet and absconded. He told the police that after this he asked Sanjay several times to come with him to the hospital, but every time he kept avoiding. Finally he said that he was going to have a liquor party with a friend and refused to go to the hospital. Sanjay did not want to go to the hospital by making an excuse, but even on the next day of the incident, i.e. 9th August, he looked very relaxed and happy. He came to know at 12 o’clock in the night of 9th August that the police wanted to arrest Sanjay in that case, he called Sanjay several times.

Currently, Sanjay Roy, the accused of rape and murder in Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, is in jail. These evidences include technical evidence, crime scene and the things recovered from Sanjay, which have implicated him. After the incident, the police had already got the CCTV footage of Sanjay Roy, in which he was seen going towards the seminar hall of the hospital. After this, his broken Bluetooth neckband was also found from the spot, which was paired with his mobile phone, this also proved to be an important reason for his arrest. Apart from this, from 8.30 to 9.45 pm on August 9, experts of the Forensic Science Laboratory collected more than 40 exhibits i.e. samples from the crime scene and their videography was done properly.

All these exhibits point towards the fact that the accused is none other than Sanjay. Kolkata Police collected all the data of Sanjay Roy’s mobile phone under the supervision of the magistrate. It also proves that the location of his mobile phone was near the emergency building of RG Kar Hospital at the time of the incident. Apart from this, the places from where he travelled to reach here and the places where he stopped are all recorded in the mobile phone. Apart from this, there is CCTV footage. Police have also found his girlfriend’s private pictures as well as those strange porn videos from his mobile phone.

These videos cannot be watched by a common man. These videos are beyond relationships and are extremely violent. Forensic experts have found the trainee doctor’s fingerprints on his body and some things around it. Apart from this, the police have the trainee doctor’s blood stains on his clothes, inner garments, slippers worn during the incident. Moreover, Sanjay Roy’s blood sample has also matched with some blood stains found at the scene. Semen and other body fluids also match Sanjay’s DNA.

These are very important evidences against Sanjay. Apart from this, some pictures of Sanjay captured in the CCTV cameras of a bank in Shyambazar area of Kolkata confirm his movements. These too were kept safe by the police, which have now been handed over to the CBI. Till a few days ago, this question was on everyone’s lips whether Sanjay alone carried out this crime or was there someone else with him. But all the technical evidences and other proofs confirmed that Sanjay Roy alone carried out the rape and murder of the trainee doctor on the night of 8 and 9 August. And now the CBI is preparing to file a charge sheet against Sanjay on the basis of these proofs.
