The Perfect Couple Dance: I’m obsessed with the show’s opening credits

For the past few weeks, I’ve been crazy with an obsession, and now I can finally admit it. I can’t stop thinking about The perfect couple dance

NetflixA new series of The perfect couple There are many factors that can make it a hit. Based on the best-selling book by Dear Author Aline Hilderbrand, The third in her wildly popular “Nantucket” series. The cast is absolutely stacked; those stars Nicole KidmanLiv Schreiber, Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson, Meghan FahyAnd other actors you’ll definitely recognize, like the guy who played the horrible boyfriend Midsummer. It’s a sexy, edgy murder mystery set in a wealthy enclave that offers both an entertaining plot and lots of porn real estate.

But the real draw of the show? Its completely pointless yet utterly hilarious opening credits sequence. At the beginning of each episode, the entire cast—leads, supporting characters, and extras—perform a choreographed dance routine to a catchy pop song during a rehearsal dinner before the wedding. Why? Extremely vague.

I first fell in love with the dance routine while watching the pilot episode. “Why, this is delightful!” I thought to myself. Imagine my surprise when this was not just an element of the first half of the show, but something that would repeat every episode. My husband soon joined me to watch the rest of the series, and whenever a song and dance routine came on, we sat on the couch, trying to do the moves (badly) and singing along.

Predictably, the song soon became hopelessly stuck in my head. So, I pulled out Shazam to identify it. When nothing came up, I assumed it was the song specifically written “Raise Your Glass” by Dayna Deadly, aka The, is one of my favorite songs of all time to use like this. Vanderpump rules Theme song.

I was completely wrong! Turns out, the song titled “Criminals” is the one and only by Meghan Trainor. The reason I couldn’t find it was because it hadn’t been released yet. The song was officially dropped on August 16, shortly before the show’s premiere, as part of a deluxe edition of Trainor’s sixth studio album. Timeless.

But why does The perfect couple Open with a dance routine in the first place? And what is that dance they’re doing, right? To answer my questions, I turned to Netflix, which was kind enough to bring them to the series’ director and executive producer, Susan Beer.

Her explanation is both simple and makes perfect sense.

“I thought it was really fun for those characters,” she tells me.

Beer says that in his mind, the backstory of the dance was that everyone practiced the choreography until the day of the rehearsal dinner so they could all dance together.

Maybe this is something rich people do on Nantucket? I’m not sure because I’ve never been to a wedding at the Nantucket Mansion (if anyone wants to invite me, I’m game). But in real life the dance was choreographed Charm Ladona Specially for The perfect couple.

“I wanted to create something that the whole cast could enjoy, like you could join in the dance at a party,” the dancer and choreographer tells me. “It was exciting to create such a light and fun moment for Meghan’s song ‘Criminal’ which has such a great record to dance to. It was a perfect moment for The perfect couple

For Beer, the lighthearted moment is the perfect encapsulation of the show.

“I wanted to signal to the audience that it’s a murder mystery, guys. It has a dark undercurrent but it’s really a lot of fun, you have to know that this is not going to be homework,” she says. “It’s not going to be a serious ride, it’s going to be fun, light and bubbly.”

Mystery solved. Now, to watch The perfect couple Dance 10,000 more times on YouTube.
