‘The number of illegal immigrants is increasing in Manipur, we need to save our people’, said CM Biren Singh

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has once again raised the issue of illegal immigrants in the state. He said that we need to save our land and people and we will do so. The CM said that illegal immigration in Manipur is a serious issue that needs immediate attention.

The chief minister said a review of the state’s demographic changes over the last two decades revealed a rapid increase in population in one community linked to a controversial policy of the previous government that allowed uncontrolled immigration from the neighbouring country.

Minorities in our country- CM

The Chief Minister said that if this trend continues, it can endanger the future of our indigenous communities, making our own people a minority on their own land. He said that this issue has to be resolved by all of us. It is important to implement strict immigration policies and protect the demographic balance and cultural heritage of our state.

The CM said that in March 2023, a cabinet sub-committee on identification of illegal immigrants led by Minister Letpao Haokip along with other members had visited five hill districts to assess the situation of illegal immigration in the state. During this, a total of 2,480 illegal Myanmar immigrants were identified.

The state government was also shocked to find such a large number of illegal immigrants in such a short time. The process of identifying illegal immigrants was stopped when a member of the sub-committee informed the committee about the firing going on in the forward villages.
