The interim government canceled the diplomatic passports issued to Sheikh Hasina and her MPs, demand for extradition also arose

Even after the coup in Bangladesh, neither the incidents of violence are stopping nor the troubles of former PM Sheikh Hasina. There are constant reports of assault on the workers of her party Awami League. Sheikh Hasina has also been booked in several cases. Meanwhile, news has come out that the Home Department of the interim government has also canceled all diplomatic passports issued to MPs during Sheikh Hasina’s time. This includes the cancellation of Sheikh Hasina’s passport as well. Let us tell you that diplomatic passport holders get many privileges including visa-free travel to some countries.

Sheikh Hasina is in India

Sheikh Hasina has been in India since August 5 after leaving Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina’s status still remains uncertain as she is seeking asylum in Britain or another European country, but no country has approved her yet. According to reports, Sheikh Hasina’s prolonged stay could create potential diplomatic complications for India, especially at a time when Bangladesh has started pressing for her extradition. However, experts say that Bangladesh has not yet made a formal extradition request. Even if it is made, India is not obliged to accept it.

BNP leader had demanded extradition

In fact, during a speech in Dhaka, BNP General Secretary Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had demanded the extradition of Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh. Addressing India directly, he said, ‘We appeal to you to hand her over to the Bangladesh government in a legal manner. The people of this country have decided her case, let her face the trial.’ According to reports, Mirza Fakhrul also accused Sheikh Hasina of conspiring while staying in India to weaken the ongoing revolution in Bangladesh.

Know what is the extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh

India and Bangladesh signed an extradition treaty in 2013 under which both countries extradite fugitives who have fled from each other’s countries. However, the bilateral extradition treaty does not apply to people involved in politics unless the fugitive is facing serious charges like murder.

It is being told that India can deny this demand of Bangladesh by citing Article 8 of the Extradition Treaty. Article 8 states that if the demand for extradition is not ‘in good faith or in the interest of justice’ then it can be denied. BNP chief and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia says that Sheikh Hasina’s crimes are extraditable and hence she should be sent back to Bangladesh from India. Khaleda Zia was released from house arrest after Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and left the country.
