The government has formed a central team to assess the damage caused by the floods, it will visit Gujarat soon

The Home Ministry has constituted an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) led by the Executive Director of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) to assess the damage caused by rain and floods in Gujarat. The IMCT will soon visit the flood-affected districts of Gujarat.

During 25-30 August, Gujarat was severely affected by heavy to very heavy rainfall due to a deep depression over Rajasthan and Gujarat. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan were also affected by heavy to very heavy rainfall.

This year Himachal Pradesh has also been affected by heavy rains, cloudbursts and landslides. The Home Ministry is in touch with senior officials of these states and if serious damage is reported from there, IMCT will be sent there too. Apart from this, some other states have also been affected by heavy rains, floods, cloudbursts and landslides etc. during this monsoon season.

Earlier the visit used to take place only after receiving the memorandum

The government has issued a statement saying that the central government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, is fully committed to providing all possible help to the disaster-affected states. Under an important decision taken by Home Minister Amit Shah in August 2019, the Home Ministry constitutes IMCT to assess the damage on the spot without waiting for the memorandum from the affected states.

This year, the Home Ministry has constituted IMCTs which have already visited flood/landslide-affected Assam, Kerala, Mizoram and Tripura to assess the damage on the spot without waiting for the memorandum. An IMCT has also been constituted for Nagaland which will soon visit the affected areas of the state. Earlier, the IMCT used to visit disaster-affected states only after receiving a memorandum from the state government.
