The ‘clock’ is getting loose in Ajit Pawar’s weakening political hands

Everything was going well around Ajit Pawar before the Lok Sabha elections. After the results came on June 4, it became clear that nothing was really right. The reality was hidden, so everything looked fine.

Had everything been under control after the electoral loss, there would have been no need to worry, but the activism of Sharad Pawar, who emerged stronger after the Lok Sabha elections, has started increasing Ajit Pawar’s troubles continuously – and a big and new trouble in that is the notice received from the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has sought a response from Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and his 40 MLAs on Sharad Pawar’s petition against Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar’s decision to accept Ajit Pawar’s faction as the real NCP. Note that Ajit Pawar is using the clock election symbol only till the final decision of the court comes, and on the court’s order, he had to tell people about this by giving advertisements in the media during the Lok Sabha elections.

Of course Ajit Pawar remains the deputy CM of Maharashtra, his wife Sunetra Pawar has also reached Rajya Sabha despite losing the election from Baramati Lok Sabha seat, but other things are not getting better. Even the rebel allies have started leaving, and BJP too is not as interested in Ajit Pawar as before.

1. Poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections

Ajit Pawar’s NCP had the worst performance in the Lok Sabha elections. It was able to win only one Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra. After the rebellion against Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar had given the biggest challenge by fielding Sunetra Pawar on the Baramati seat, but he lost.

Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule retained the Baramati seat with the blessings of her father and defeated her sister-in-law Sunetra Pawar. If seen, the Baramati front was very difficult for both Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule, because Ajit Pawar was just playing the role of a pawn and the real game was being played by the BJP.

But just as Sharad Pawar defeated BJP in the Satara by-election in 2019 by holding a rally while getting drenched in rain, he once again handed the gift of defeat to Ajit Pawar – Ajit Pawar was the apple of BJP’s eye only as long as he could harm Sharad Pawar, if he is not able to do this work then what good is he for?

Now Ajit Pawar has to pay the price of his poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections every day, and is suffering the consequences at every step.

2. Trustworthy people leaving and going to Sharad Pawar camp

Earlier there were reports of only district level leaders of Ajit Pawar’s camp leaving, but now there are talks of many MLAs of Ajit Pawar’s NCP also being in touch with the leaders of Sharad Pawar faction.

Many leaders are said to be in the queue after Babajani Durrani, who is considered one of the big Muslim faces of NCP, left Ajit Pawar. Babajani had recently met Sharad Pawar during his visit to Sambhajinagar.

Babajani has claimed that many big NCP leaders are angry with Ajit Pawar. Babajani Durrani was till now the president of Ajit Pawar faction’s NCP in Parbhani district and is a member of the Legislative Council. His term is going to end after a few days. After Babajani, Ajit Pawar’s three fellow MLAs are also expected to go to Sharad Pawar’s camp.

However, in between, there are some relief events happening for Ajit Pawar. Though not to Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar has definitely given a big shock to the Congress. In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, former Congress MLA from Kannada constituency Nitin Patil met Ajit Pawar and tied a ‘watch’ on his hand. The watch is actually the election symbol of Ajit Pawar’s NCP.

3. Now the debate on the claim of the real NCP is getting heated in the court

Ajit Pawar will have the clock election symbol till the Supreme Court gives its verdict on this matter. The Supreme Court had told this to Ajit Pawar before the Lok Sabha elections. Along with this, he was also instructed to give advertisements in the media and clearly tell people that the clock election symbol is with him only temporarily, till the court gives its verdict on the case. Now the Supreme Court has issued a notice to Ajit Pawar and asked him to respond in this matter.

Ajit Pawar rebelled against his uncle Sharad Pawar and joined the Maharashtra government of the BJP alliance led by Eknath Shinde. Along with Ajit Pawar, a large number of MLAs also left Sharad Pawar. On February 15, 2024, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar ruled that the faction led by Ajit Pawar is the real NCP – and also rejected the demand of both the factions to disqualify the MLAs against each other.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared on behalf of Sharad Pawar in the Supreme Court, has appealed to the Supreme Court to hear the petition immediately keeping in mind the remaining term of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. The term of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is going to end in November 2024.

Speaker Rahul Narvekar’s decision has been challenged in the Supreme Court on behalf of Sharad Pawar – and in this case, the Supreme Court has also sought a reply from Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and his 40 MLAs.

4. Ajit Pawar’s loss, Sharad Pawar’s gain

The situation in the fight between uncle and nephew is such that every loss of Ajit Pawar is a profitable deal for Sharad Pawar. Ajit Pawar, who is standing on the threshold of Maharashtra elections, has a lot to lose, whereas Sharad Pawar has only a gain to make.

After the Lok Sabha elections, Ajit Pawar may have to face the next loss in the seat sharing, provided Ajit Pawar and BJP remain together till the assembly elections. Now BJP will at least manage to get rid of Ajit Pawar in the minimum number of seats.

It is possible that even if BJP spares Ajit Pawar the assembly seats in the Lok Sabha seats where NCP has won, it will think twice before taking any risk in Baramati and the surrounding areas.

If Sharad Pawar is able to maintain the Lok Sabha performance in the Maharashtra assembly elections on his own, then one can only imagine what will be the situation of Ajit Pawar after the elections – and if Ajit Pawar is not found to be of any use to the BJP, then the post of deputy CM should not be given to him for long.

5. There was a demand in BJP to get rid of Ajit Pawar

So far, there has been no indication from the BJP leadership or Sharad Pawar about getting rid of Ajit Pawar, but such demands have started coming from the lower level or from the Sangh camp. In a report by Vivek, a weekly magazine with a Sangh bent, it was told that not only the BJP leaders and workers but also the supporters are feeling displeasure over the alliance with Ajit Pawar.
