The jawan went missing in 2023

Mountaineers from the High Altitude Warfare School carried out this heroic mission. The team recovered the bodies of three soldiers who were trapped in a fatal slide during an expedition to Mount Kun in October 2023.

The accident happened during the Mount Kun expedition

In July 2023, a 38-member mountaineering expedition of HAWS set out to conquer Mount Kun in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The expedition began on 01 October 2023 and the team was expected to conquer Mount Kun by 13 October 2023. Unpredictable weather in this snowy terrain caused many difficulties. While fixing ropes on the snow wall, the team was hit by a sudden avalanche at an altitude of over 18,300 feet between Camp 2 and Camp 3 on the Fariyabad Glacier on 08 October 2023. All but four of them were rescued.

4 soldiers were buried in snow

The remaining four members were trapped in the fatal slide. The expedition team made every possible effort to rescue the team members, but after much effort the team could only recover the body of Lance Naik Stanzin Targais. The bodies of Havildar Rohit, Havildar Thakur Bahadur Ale and Naik Gautam Rajbanshi remained trapped in a deep crevice buried under layers of snow and ice. Their bodies have now been recovered.
