In Mukherjee Nagar, which is famous for civil service exam preparation, MCD has locked the libraries running in the basement. The basement of Vikas Divyakriti’s Drishti Institute, which is very popular among the students, has also come under the grip of this action of MCD. MCD has locked it too. Reports have quoted MCD officials as saying that Drishti IAS was running coaching classes in the basement of his building, while this basement was to be used only for storage.

Let us tell you that last Saturday, three students studying in Rao IAS Coaching Center in Old Rajinder Nagar drowned after water filled in the basement. An illegal library was running in the basement of the coaching center. After this incident, MCD is taking action against the libraries running in the basement. Apart from Drishti IAS Coaching Center, the basements of Vajiram, Ravi and Shriram IAS have also been sealed. So far, MCD has sealed six basements in Old Rajendra Nagar, due to which the total number of sealed basements has increased to 20.

20 basements of coaching institutes sealed

The municipal corporation also carried out an anti-encroachment drive in Old Rajendra Nagar, demolishing structures that were covering storm drains, leading to flood-like situation in the area, officials said on Monday. MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar told reporters that a sealing drive would be carried out in other parts of the city too against establishments illegally using basements for commercial activities. So far, 20 basements of coaching institutes have been sealed in Rajendra Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar, which were being illegally used to run libraries or classes, officials said.

Biometric entry and exit gates could not be opened

Due to heavy rains, the only biometric entry and exit gate of Rao IAS Study Circle in Old Rajendra Nagar in central Delhi was reportedly not able to open due to waterlogging in the basement. An MCD official said that action is being taken against establishments illegally using basements in the area. Later, a similar drive will be launched across the city against establishments operating illegally from basements, the official said.

Most coaching center libraries are closed

A candidate studying at a coaching centre in Mukherjee Nagar and preparing for the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil services examination said that after Saturday’s incident, the libraries of most coaching centres have been closed. The student said, ‘I have to appear for the UPSC Mains exam in one and a half months and the library of my coaching centre has been closed. All my books and preparation material are in the library and now I am not allowed to take my books from there.’
