However Bachelorette Season 21 seemed to be headed for a happy ending for Jane Tran and her reported beau Devin Strader.
Jesse Palmer promised a finale that would keep us on the edge of our seats the entire time, and boy did the three-hour live event deliver. Shortly before we saw Jen and Devin’s heartwarming engagement, we saw Jen confide in host Jesse Palmer after the final rose ceremony that they were no longer together. Earlier today, Reality Steve shared the following finale spoiler with fansWhich prompted pre-finale speculation that Devin had broken off the engagement: “In tonight’s finale, you’ll see Jen getting engaged to Devin. That spoiler remains. However, the rumors that have been circulating for a few weeks now are true. Devin has called off the engagement and broken up with Jane. I don’t know the circumstances surrounding it in terms of when it happened or the reasoning behind it. Guess we’ll find out tonight. Curious to see the rationale for the breakup since Devin has loved Jane since hometown and now he is still in a relationship with her and can’t get through to ATFR. Should be an interesting night.
So what exactly happened? During the finale, Jane told Jessie that she “felt 100%” about her decision to say goodbye to Marcus, but that she woke up the next day with Devin “with a completely different outlook.” She realized that she had to choose herself in order to fulfill herself, so she wasn’t going to let Devin propose to her—she was going to propose to Devin.
Before the proposal, however, Jesse storms out of the studio to announce that we won’t see the proposal until we hear from Jen “because of what happened” from that day in Hawaii. So what did Jane have to say?!
The season 21 lead returned to the stage in tears and gathered herself to announce, “It’s been a really hard few months. We left the air engagement very happy. It was the happiest day of my life, I thought I had found the person I was going to spend the rest of my life with. And then inevitably as soon as we left Hawaii things were just different. It seemed that he was pulling away, the promises he made wanted to be together somewhere and see each other all the time – the efforts were inconsistent. I was confused that I didn’t understand because we got so happy.
“I felt like I was the priority for everything in his life, he was no longer introducing me to his family,” she continued. “I didn’t understand why, and at the beginning of last month we planned a happy couple, and the night before that I got a call and he basically broke off the engagement. He basically said he doesn’t love me anymore and doesn’t feel the same way and that something felt off ever since he proposed, and he regrets getting engaged.”
“For the last month I’ve been trying to empathize with the way he’s been feeling … how could he switch like that,” Jane wipes away tears. She noted how difficult it was to come off the show and said that she even told Devin that they could take the pressure off of being engaged and just a date, but that he was “investigated” and it wasn’t what he wanted anymore. Jen said Devin no longer wants to go to couple’s counseling or fight for the relationship and has been ghosting her since they last saw each other in July.
