Thar Roxx vs Old 3 Door: More practical and advanced! How different is the new ‘Thar Roxx’ from the regular three-door, know the full details

Mahindra has finally launched its new five-door Thar i.e. Thar ROXX in the domestic market. This SUV was being awaited for the last 2 years. After many spy pictures and teaser images, the five-door Thar is in front of the people. The company has made many big changes in this SUV which makes it different from the three-door model. People have many questions related to this SUV. Today in this article we have brought answers to all those questions of yours-

How is the new Thar ROXX:

First of all, compared to the 3-door Thar, the Thar Rocks gets a completely new design front grille that comes with 6 double-stacked slots. While the Thar 3-door has 7 slots. The headlamps retain the round shape design, but now they get an LED projector setup with C-shaped daytime running lamps. Higher variants are expected to get LED fog lamps. The front bumper includes some unique design elements, along with integrated fog lamp housing and brushed aluminum bits in the center.

The mid-variant of the Rocks gets 18-inch alloy wheels. While the higher variants are expected to get chunky wheel arches and stylish 19-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels. The front door looks similar to the standard Thar, the rear door has a unique vertically positioned handle. The rear door quarter glass has a triangular shape, which looks inspired by the Thar EV concept. The Thar Rocks will have a dual-tone paint shade for most variants – with a contrast black roof – which will give it a removable hardtop look.

Price and Variants:

The entry level base variant (MX1, petrol) of Mahindra Thar Rocks is priced at Rs 12.99 lakh, while the base variant with diesel engine starts at Rs 13.99 lakh. Currently, the company has revealed the prices of only the rear wheel drive (RWD) version. At the time of launch, the company had said that the prices of its four wheel drive (4X4) variant will be announced after its booking and response from customers. That is, at this time only two-wheel drive variants will be talked about.

Mahindra Thar Roxx variants and prices:

Variants Petrol (price) Diesel (price)
MX1 12.99 (MT) 13.99 (MT)
MX3 ₹14.99 (AT) 15.99 (MT)
AX3 L , 16.99 (MT)
MX5 , 16.99 (MT)
AX5 L , ₹18.99 (AT)
AX7 L , 18.99 (MT)

Note: Here MT means manual transmission and AT means automatic transmission. All prices are ex-showroom.

What are the engine options:

The company has introduced Thar Roxx with both petrol and diesel engine options. Like before, it has a 2.0 liter turbo-petrol (mStallion) engine and a 2.2 liter (mHawk) diesel engine. Which you also get to see in some other models of the company like Scorpio and XUV 700. However, due to being tuned differently, there is a difference in their power output.

The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine of the Thar Rocks generates 162hp of power and 330Nm of torque. This engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. At the same time, its 6-speed torque converter automatic variant generates 177hp of power and 380Nm of torque. Talking about diesel, the 2.2-litre diesel engine generates 152hp of power and 330Nm of torque. However, its four-wheel drive (4X4) variant generates 175hp of power and 370Nm of torque. It is important to note here that the Thar Rocks comes with a standard rear-wheel drive setup. Its four-wheel drive variant will be available only with a diesel engine.

How different is Thar Roxx from the regular Thar:

The biggest difference is in the size and doors. Which you can see directly. The wheelbase of Thar Rocks is 400 mm longer than the three-door model. The three-door has a wheelbase of 2450 mm and the wheelbase of Thar Rocks is 2850 mm long. This provides better space in the cabin. This SUV based on a ladder-frame chassis has a water wading capacity of 650 mm. That is, it can easily run up to a depth of 650 mm under water.

It has a better suspension setup than the Scorpio N. Which includes frequency-dependent dampers. Which gives the Thar Rocks better on-road manners. Apart from this, it has electric power steering, while the Thar 3-door gets a hydraulic unit. Overall, in terms of offroading and handling, it can prove to be better than the three-door.

Better features than the regular Thar:

Over time, the Thar Roxx has been equipped with advanced features. Its cabin has been equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, LED projector headlamps, 360-degree camera, push-button start, armrests for front and rear seats, rear AC vents for the convenience of rear seat passengers, large 19-inch diamond cut alloy wheels and lastly, a panoramic sunroof.

Great Safety:

For safety, the Thar Rocks comes with features like 6 airbags (three-door gets 2 airbags), Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS Level-2), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Antilock Braking System (ABS), Brake Locking Differential (BLD), Hill Descent Control (HDC), Traction Control System (TCS), Roll Over Mitigation (ROM), Corner Braking Control, Engine Drag Torque Control, Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), Hill Hold Control (HHC) for hilly terrains, Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA), Emergency Stop Signal and Brake Disc Wiping.

However, the crash test of this SUV has not been done yet. But Mahindra says that soon it will be crash tested by Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP), in which it is expected to get a better rating. Let us tell you that the three-door Thar got a 4 star rating in the crash test conducted by Global NCAP in the year 2020.

These things can bother you:

The affordable price at which Thar Roxx has been launched was not expected. On the other hand, its advanced features definitely make it better but there are some things that can bother the customers. For example, the company has used a beige color theme to make the cabin of this SUV luxurious. In such a situation, it is quite difficult to maintain a light colored cabin for an offroading vehicle. On the other hand, there is a fear of the cabin getting dirty even by opening the sunroof.

There is no petrol (4X4) option:

Some customers were waiting for the four-wheel drive (4X4) system with the petrol engine option. But four-wheel drive is being offered only in the diesel engine option of Thar Rocks. However, the company has not yet announced the prices of all the variants of this SUV. Apart from this, petrol (4X4) has not been listed on the official website either. However, the prices of many variants (AX3 L, MX5, AX5 L, AX7 L) coming with petrol engines are yet to be made public.

Bookings & Deliveries:

The company says that the test drive of Thar Roxx will start from September 14. After this, official booking will start from October 3. This SUV can be booked through the company’s website and authorized dealership. The delivery of the new five-door Thar Roxx will start on the occasion of Dussehra. If you also want to take a thrilling ride on the new Thar, then get ready.
