Telegram CEO Pavel Durov revealed that he himself had once helped France, but had to pay Rs 464.6 crore for its bail

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested in France last month. He was arrested for not cooperating with law enforcement agencies and illegal transactions going on on his platform. In simple words, Telegram is accused of not doing proper moderation on the platform.

It is alleged that content ranging from drug deals to data theft and pornography is shared on this platform. However, Pavel has been released on bail of 50 lakh euros (about Rs 464.69 crore). This is the first time after his release that Durov has issued an official statement. He has written a long post on X, in which he has questioned this action.

Helped the French authorities

He shared many things, including setting up a hotline in collaboration with the French authorities. He said that the French authorities had asked him for help, after which he established a hotmail with Telegram so that the threats of terrorism in France could be dealt with.

Pavel Durov has written a long tweet, in which he has given all the information. He has thanked everyone for their support and love. Pavel said, ‘Last month, the police in Paris interrogated me for 4 days. I was told that I might be responsible for other people’s illegal use of Telegram. Because the French authorities are not getting a response from Telegram.’

Why is Telegram being compared to the dark web?

What Pavel Durov wrote

He said that he is surprised and there are many reasons for this. Pavel Durov wrote in his tweet, ‘Telegram has an official representative in the EU, who accepts and replies to all EU requests. His email address is available to everyone, which anyone can search.’

He said, ‘The French authorities could have reached out to me in many ways and asked for my cooperation. As a French citizen, I have visited the French Consulate in Dubai many times as a guest. A long time ago, when they asked for help, I personally established a hotline with Telegram to deal with terrorism in France.’

Durov said, “If a country is upset with an internet service, the established approach is to take legal action against the service. Using laws from a ‘pre-smartphone era’ to charge a CEO for crimes committed by third parties using his platform is a simplistic approach.”

‘Technology is hard to build anyway. No innovator would create such a tool in the future if they knew they could be held personally responsible for the potential misuse of their tool.’
