There were expectations of medals from Indian archers in Paris Olympics 2024, but they could not live up to the expectations. On August 3 (Saturday), there were high expectations from Deepika Kumari and Bhajan Kaur, but both the archers could not even reach the medal round. Bhajan Kaur lost to Indonesian archer Dianda Choirunisa in the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s individual event. The score was tied at 5-5 after five sets. In such a situation, a shootout took place between Bhajan Kaur and Dianda Choirunisa. Dianda scored 9 in the shootout, while Bhajan could only score 8.

On the other hand, Deepika Kumari was defeated by Nam Su-Hyeon of Korea 6-4 in the quarter-finals. Deepika had raised hopes of a medal by defeating Germany’s Michelle Kroppen 6-4 in the pre-quarterfinals, but she could not perform her best against Korea in the last-8 match. With Deepika’s defeat, the Indian challenge in the archery event ended. Earlier, the Indian challenge had already ended in Men’s Individual, Men’s Team, Women’s Team and Mixed Team.

India failed to qualify for archery only in Sydney Olympics 2000. Apart from this, it has participated in all the Olympic Games. Archery was included in the Olympics in 1988 and since then Indian archers have been participating in almost every Olympic Games, but have failed to reach the podium till now. This means that India has not won a single medal in the archery events of the Olympics for 36 years.

If seen, this was the first occasion after London Olympics 2012, when 6 players from India participated in the biggest Maha Kumbh of sports. Dheeraj Bommadevara, Tarundeep Rai, Praveen Jadhav, Bhajan Kaur, Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat were participating in Paris Olympics 2024. Let us tell you that the Indian men’s and women’s teams had qualified for the Olympics on the basis of ranking, due to which this time Indian archers were participating in 5 events. This was the fourth Olympics for experienced Tarundeep Rai and Deepika Kumari.

In the Tokyo Olympics, all the male archers of India could not make it to the top 30, due to which the Indian team got the 9th seed. India’s only female archer Deepika had secured the 9th position. India then had to face defeat against top seeded Korea in their quarter-final matches. Although the performance of Indian archers improved this time, the medal drought continued.

Dheeraj-Bhakt performed brilliantly but…

Ankita Bhakat and Dheeraj Bommadevara performed commendably for India in the archery event. Ankita-Dheeraj missed out on winning the bronze medal in the mixed team event. In the bronze medal match, Ankita-Dheeraj were defeated by Brady Ellison and Casey Kaufhold of USA 2-6. The American pair had won the first two sets. After this, the Indian pair made a comeback and won the third set, but then in the fourth set, USA once again won the match. The Indian pair had earlier lost to Korea 2-6 in the semi-finals. However, despite missing out on the medal, Ankita-Dheeraj created history. For the first time, Indian players reached the semi-finals in an archery event at the Olympics.
