Doctors strike in Haryana, The health system in Haryana has completely collapsed due to the doctors’ strike. Patients are not getting proper treatment and their attendants are wandering from door to door. No solution has been found in the talks between the government and the striking doctors. The indefinite strike of about 3,000 doctors will continue as the talks between the government and an organization representing the state’s government doctors remained inconclusive on Thursday. The doctors’ strike began on Thursday. Due to this, health services in the state government hospital were badly affected. The ‘Haryana Civil Medical Service Association’, which represents government doctors in the state, has called for this strike as their various demands were not met.

There has been no significant progress on the demands, the strike continues

At the end of the second round of talks that continued till late evening, the association’s president Dr. Rajesh Khyali said that there has been no significant progress on demands like career promotion scheme. Therefore, health services will remain completely closed. The hunger strike of four doctors (including Khyali) will also continue. He said that the second round of talks with the Additional Chief Secretary (Health) did not yield any significant result. Long queues were seen in front of Outpatient Departments (OPDs) in Haryana’s government hospitals and health services were also affected.

Patients complained that interns and retired doctors were treating them.

These doctors are demanding creation of specialist cadre, career promotion scheme to ensure their parity with central government doctors. The association had called for closure of health services in government hospitals to protest non-fulfillment of the doctors’ demands. During the day, Dr Khyaliy said doctors from various government hospitals across the state have gone on indefinite strike. He said the strike includes civil hospitals, up-district hospitals, community and primary health centres. Khyaliy said OPD, emergency medicine and post-mortem have also been affected.

What are the demands of doctors?

Other demands of the doctors include no direct recruitment of senior medical officers and reduction in bond amount for postgraduate courses. Long queues of patients were seen at the outpatient departments (OPDs) of district hospitals at several places, including Panipat, Gurgaon, Bhiwani and Hisar. Patients said they were told that the doctors were on strike. At some other places, some patients who came to the OPD for treatment said that doctors undergoing postgraduate training, internship and retired doctors were treating them. However, health officials have said that alternative arrangements have been made so that patients do not face much inconvenience.

The government was already warned

Dr Khyaliy said on Wednesday that for the last several months we are only being given assurances regarding our demands, but these have not been fulfilled yet. Therefore, we have decided to keep OPD, emergency room, post-mortem and other health services completely closed. He said that the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department had assured us on July 18 that a notification will be issued before July 24 regarding our two demands – permanent career promotion and bond issue, but nothing happened. Dr Khyaliy said that we had told the government a month ago that if our demands are not met, we will stop all services from July 25.

The government said, the demands will be considered seriously

In a letter sent to the association, state Health Minister Kamal Gupta has urged the doctors to consider the impact of the strike on the general public. He said, I understand that many important demands have been put forward by your members and I want to assure you that these demands are being seriously considered. The Health Minister said, “Recently I had a meeting with the Chief Minister and other high officials to discuss these matters in detail. We understand the importance of your demands and for this we are trying to find a solution that is also satisfactory to all the concerned parties. The government doctors of the state went on a two-hour strike on July 15 over their demands. OPD services were affected in government health centers across the state due to the strike.
