Syed Refat Ahmed sworn in as 25th Chief Justice of Bangladesh, appointed by the President

Syed Refat Ahmed has taken oath as the 25th Chief Justice of Bangladesh. President Mohammad Shahabuddin administered the oath of office to him at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban on Sunday. The President appointed Syed Refat Ahmed on Saturday. The Law Ministry has issued a notification in this regard.

According to the notification, ‘The President, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Article 95 (1) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, has appointed Justice Syed Refat Ahmed, Judge of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh.

Syed Refat Ahmed was born on December 28, 1958. His father, Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed, served as the former Attorney General of Bangladesh. His mother, Dr. Sufia Ahmed, was a National Professor of Bangladesh and a prominent professor of Islamic history and culture at the University of Dhaka.

The student movement had demanded the appointment

The Anti-Discrimination Students Movement had earlier demanded that Syed Refat Ahmed be appointed as the Chief Justice. Following this, Obaidul Hasan resigned from the post of Chief Justice of Bangladesh. Later, Appellate Division Judge Mohammad Ashfaqul Islam was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice.

Obaidul Hasan had resigned

Bangladesh Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan resigned on Saturday on the demand of the protesters. The protesters surrounded the Supreme Court in Dhaka and gave an ultimatum to all the judges including the Chief Justice to resign by 1 pm. After this, the Chief Justice submitted his resignation after consulting President Mohammad Shahabuddin.
