Sports Quota Jobs: How do Olympians get government jobs? Know the rules and grade pay

Sports Quota Jobs: If you also stop your child from playing for a better future, then you are making a mistake. Because now the slogan ‘Kheloge-Kudoge Kharaab Nahi, Banoge Lajawaab’ is given. Many government departments including Indian Railways, Indian Army, Police, Government Banks/Universities, Public Sector recruit meritorious players from time to time. These departments of the Government of India are always ready to encourage players. This gives job security to the players and their desire to achieve glory for the country through sports is strengthened. A good example of this is former captain of the Indian cricket team Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the Territorial Army after winning the 2011 World Cup. After this rank, he goes to the Army from time to time for training. Apart from him, former cricketer Harbhajan Singh was made Deputy SP in Punjab.

Government of India recruits meritorious sportspersons who have represented national and international events in South Asian Federation Games, Asian Games, Federation Cup, World Cup, District, State, Olympic and Commonwealth Games, USIC Championships and many other sports activities to any post in Group ‘C’ or erstwhile Group ‘D’ through direct recruitment.

List of sports in which meritorious players are appointed

There are around 43 sports for which players are given jobs on the basis of merit in the following areas –
Archery, Athletics (including track and field events) Atya-Patya, Badminton, Ball-Badminton, Basketball, Billiards and Snooker, Boxing, Bridge, Carrom, Chess, Cricket, Cycling, Equestrian Sports, Football, Golf, Gymnastics (including Body Building), Handball, Hockey, Ice-Skiing, Ice-Hockey, Ice-Skating, Judo, Kabaddi, Karate-Do, Kayaking and Canoeing, Kho-Kho, Polo, Powerlifting, Rifle Shooting, Roller Skating, Rowing, Soft Ball, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball, Weight Lifting, Wrestling and Sailing.

Eligibility Criteria for Sports Quota Jobs
The minimum eligibility criteria for recruitment through sports quota is 10th and Intermediate. Different departments have different selection criteria for sports quota jobs, which are mandatory for players to fulfill. Apart from this, there is also a provision for different eligibility criteria according to different grade pay for jobs in sports quota.

Eligibility of sportspersons for government jobs

  • Candidate who has represented any State or Country in National or International Competition.
  • Candidate who has represented his/her University in Inter-University Tournaments organised by Inter-University Sports Boards.
  • Candidate who has represented State school teams in National Games/Games for Schools organised by All India School Sports Federation.
  • A player who has been awarded the National Award in Physical Efficiency under the National Physical Efficiency Campaign.

Eligibility for jobs with grade pay of 2,400/2,800

Candidates must have a graduation degree in any stream from any University recognized by the Government of India and have represented the country in Olympics/represented the country in World Cup/or have secured at least 3rd position in Commonwealth Games/Asian Games/World Championships.

Eligibility for 1,900/2,000 grade pay jobs

Candidate must have passed 10+2 and represented the country in any Category-B Championship/Event and secured at least third position in any Category-C Championship/Event/third position in Senior/Youth/Junior National Championship/National Games held under the aegis of Indian Olympic Association/All India Inter University Championship held under the aegis of Association of Indian Universities or first position in Federation Cup Championship (Senior Category).

Eligibility for 1800 grade pay job

Represented the country in any Category-C championship/event or secured third position in Federation Cup Championships (Senior Category) or represented State or equivalent unit in Senior/Youth/Junior National Championships except Marathon and Cross Country or secured at least third position in Senior State Championships for all units and districts of the State.

Selection Process for Jobs from Sports Quota
Candidates are selected on the basis of written examination/sports trial/medical test followed by interview. Such players get preference for recruitment-

  • Who has represented the country in any international competition with the approval of the Sports Department.
  • Represented the State/Union Territory in Senior or Junior level National Championships organised by National Sports Federations recognised by the Sports Department or National Games organised by Indian Olympic Association and won medals or secured upto third position.
  • Represented the University in Inter-University Competition organized by Association of Indian Universities/Inter-University Sports Board and secured 3rd position in the finals.
  • Participated in National Sports/Games for Schools organised by All India School Sports Federation on behalf of State Schools and won medals or secured position upto 3rd position.
  • Have been awarded National Award in Physical Efficiency under National Physical Efficiency Campaign or who have represented State/Union Territory/University/State School teams.

Recruitment Notification for Sports Quota Jobs

Applications for recruitment of sportspersons are invited through advertisement in employment newspaper or through circular on official website. The application received from sportspersons by the appointing authority or higher authority is considered by the Ministry/Department or Head of Department for further recruitment process.
