Special session of Bengal Assembly from tomorrow, Mamata government will introduce anti-rape law, BJP also supports

The Mamata government is deeply embroiled in the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital and Medical College. There are continuous protests against the state government. Amidst all this, the state government has called a two-day special session of the Bengal Assembly on Monday.

During this special session, a bill will be introduced which proposes to ensure death penalty to the rape convicts within 10 days. According to sources, the special session will begin on Monday and the proposed bill is likely to be introduced on Tuesday. The main opposition party BJP will support Mamata’s move in the assembly.

BJP said – will support the bill

The BJP has said that BJP MLAs will support the West Bengal government’s bill against rape. Monday’s session will end after a condolence call. BJP state chief Sukanta Majumdar said on Sunday, “We have decided that BJP MLAs will support Mamata Banerjee’s bill in the state assembly.” Majumdar said that they will continue to protest inside the assembly demanding Mamata’s resignation.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had announced on Wednesday on the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad that this bill will be passed by calling a special session of the Bengal Legislative Assembly next week. A few hours after the Chief Minister’s announcement, a meeting of the State Cabinet was held in the evening at the State Secretariat Navanna and the convening of a special session of the Legislative Assembly was approved in it.

Mamta had announced

Let us tell you that a few days ago, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee dedicated the foundation day of her party’s student wing to the rape and murder victim of Kolkata. Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) is the student wing of TMC.

In her address on the foundation day of TMCP, CM Mamata Banerjee said that her government will make an anti-rape law, so that the accused in such cases get death penalty. Taking a dig at the BJP over the ‘Bengal Bandh’ called in protest against the Kolkata rape-murder case, the Chief Minister said that the saffron party does not want justice for the victim, it is only trying to defame Bengal.

She said, ‘I urge all groups to protest on August 31 demanding death penalty for the accused in the Kolkata case… and urge women to protest on September 1 demanding a change in the law to give death penalty to rape accused.’

BJP is demanding resignation

BJP is demanding resignation from Mamata Banerjee over Kolkata incident. In response, the TMC chief said, ‘Have the Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Manipur resigned over crimes against women in their states?’ Countering the BJP’s attack, the Chief Minister questioned the progress of the CBI investigation into the Kolkata incident and asked, ‘Where is justice?’ She said, ‘I had asked for five days to solve this case. But the matter was sent to the CBI. They do not want justice but delay. It has been 16 days since the CBI started the investigation, but where is justice?’
