Spain: A 5600-year-old bridge was found underwater inside a cave on the seashore

There is an island in Spain called Mallorca. A submerged bridge has been found inside a cave here. This bridge is 5600 years old. Two things are clear from this. First, humans used to live in this cave at that time. Or they used to come and go. Second, the temperature gradually increased. Due to which the sea level kept rising and this place got submerged in water.

In future, many such cities will drown in this way. For now, let’s talk about this cave and bridge. This cave was discovered in 2000 in Al. After this, scientists saw water filled in it. They discovered the bridge under water by scuba diving. This cave is present near the Mediterranean Sea. It has a 25 feet long bridge made of limestone.

Earlier it was estimated that it is 4400 years old. Bogdan Onak, a geologist from the University of South Florida, said that the age given in the previous study was based on the pieces of pottery found around this bridge. But now we know its exact age. Bones of a special goat have been found in this cave.

Bones of extinct goat found

Bones of the goat-antelope Myotragus balearicus have been found near the bridge. Which is now extinct. It is not known when humans occupied this cave. Because Mallorca is a very large island. Humans started living on it much earlier in the Mediterranean. Whereas in Cyprus and Crete 9000 years ago.

Study of the coloured stripes on the bridge

There was so much confusion that the goat’s bones and the different coloured stripes on the bridge were studied. Because different coloured layers get deposited on things lying inside the sea. Which is called calcite encrustation. That is, a type of calcium layer. When this was examined, the correct time was found out.

This bridge was built inside this cave around 5600 years ago so that the gap between the Eastern Mediterranean and the Western Mediterranean could be bridged. People of that time used to travel from one part of the sea to another through this cave.
