Kolkata is witnessing massive protests over the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor in a Kolkata hospital. People protested here on Wednesday as well and demanded justice for the victim. During this, former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly, his wife and daughter also participated in the protest and demanded justice for the victim by lighting candles. He said that we need a safe society and rape incidents should stop.
The doctors’ agitation under the leadership of IMA continued for the tenth day across the country. CBI’s interrogation of the former principal of RG Kar Medical College is going on. Dona Ganguly said in a conversation with the media, “We are protesting against rape. We need a safe society. Rape needs to be stopped.”

I feel bad that this is happening in 2024- Sana
The Odissi dancer and members of her academy stressed the need to create a “safe society” and demanded justice for the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered in RG Kar. Her daughter Sana Ganguly said, “We want justice, this has to stop. Every day we hear about some rape case and we feel bad that this is happening even in 2024 and this has to stop.”
Demand for legal protection for doctors
While the father-daughter duo lit candles in the protest, fellow protesters sang Rabindranath Tagore’s Aguner Poroshmoni as a symbol of solidarity. The rape-murder incident at RG Kar Hospital has created a stir across the country. The doctor community is continuously protesting. They are demanding legal protection for the safety of doctors. Meanwhile, a CBI investigation is underway in the rape-murder case. The accused is also in police custody.

Case going on in Supreme Court
The Supreme Court on Tuesday constituted a ten-member task force in this case, which will make recommendations to create a safe environment at the workplace. Surgeon Vice Admiral Aarti Sarin and others have been included in the task force. The court has also asked the CBI to submit a status report of the investigation in the case. Along with this, a status report has also been sought from the Bengal government in the case of attack on the hospital on 15 August.
