So far 358 deaths in Wayanad, 200 people missing, actor Mohanlal seen with rescue operation team

The death toll in the landslide in Wayanad, Kerala rose to 358 on Saturday. Rescue teams are using deep search radars to search for people trapped under debris and in collapsed houses. The Kerala government had requested the Center to send deep search radars to assist in rescue operations. One Xaver Radar from the Northern Command and four Reeco Radar from the Tiranga Mountain Rescue Organization of Delhi were taken to Wayanad by Air Force aircraft on Saturday.

More than 200 people are still missing. Private companies specializing in search and rescue and volunteers are also involved in the rescue operation. The rescue team is led by units of the Indian Army, Kerala Police and Emergency Services. More than 1,300 rescue workers are conducting search operations under destroyed buildings and debris with heavy machinery and state-of-the-art equipment to look for survivors.

Instructions for DNA sampling of all dead bodies and remains

The Kerala government has issued guidelines, stating that bodies are to be cremated only after taking DNA and dental samples. As per the guidelines, each body or remains is to be assigned an identification number. The police have to make every effort to identify the bodies or body parts and if identification is not possible, they have to hand over the body to the district administration for further action after 72 hours of interrogation. Meanwhile, three unidentified bodies were cremated at the Kalpatta Public Crematorium. The cremations were carried out as per the state government guidelines on cremating or burying bodies in the wake of the Wayanad landslide.

Six children were rescued from a remote tribal hamlet after an eight-hour operation by Kerala forest department officials in Wayanad. Separately, a family of four was rescued from their home in Mundakkai, one of the worst-hit areas due to the disaster. Meanwhile, the Centre has issued a fresh draft notification to declare 56,800 sq km of Western Ghats in six states, including 13 villages in Wayanad, as eco-sensitive zones, inviting suggestions and objections within 60 days.

Rain forecast in Wayanad till August 6

This draft resolution proposes to declare 3.7 sq km area in Kerala, including 13 villages in two taluks of landslide-affected Wayanad, as ecologically sensitive. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy rains in Wayanad for Saturday and Sunday. Rain is expected in the district till August 6. In such a situation, rescue operations may be affected. The deployment of deep search radar is expected to increase the effectiveness of rescue operations and help locate any remaining persons trapped under the debris.
