In the aftermath of the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a video has surfaced online claiming that the authorities have “got the wrong guy.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had earlier identified the shooter as Thomas Mathew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. However, in the viral video, a man can be heard saying, “My name is Thomas Matthew Crooks. I hate Republicans. I hate Trump and guess what you got the wrong guy.”

The shooting attempt left one attendee dead and two more critically injured, before the gunman was killed by Secret Service agents. The FBI had said it was trying to identify the shooter through “biometric confirmation.”

However, the emergence of this video has cast doubt on the official narrative. A man, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, can be heard in the video claiming to be the real Thomas Matthew Crooks and asserting that the authorities have “got the wrong guy.”

This development has sparked further questions about the investigation and the true identity of the shooter. The US Secret Service is now investigating how the gunman was able to get close enough to the former president to carry out the attack.

As the investigation continues, the video has gained traction on social media, with the hashtag “#TrumpIsBack” trending in the aftermath of the assassination attempt. The shooting has once again highlighted the polarized political climate in the United States and the potential for violence at high-profile political events.
