A new report from The Washington Post reveals that the Secret Service repeatedly denied requests from Donald Trump’s security detail for additional manpower and equipment at events in the two years leading up to the recent assassination attempt.

The requests included demands for more agents, metal detectors, and sharpshooters at large public gatherings Trump attended, according to four anonymous sources familiar with the matter. However, the Secret Service turned down each plea, citing a lack of resources and staffing shortages.

At the time of the attack at Trump’s Pennsylvania rally, where he was shot and wounded by 20-year-old gunman Matthew Thomas Crooks, the former president was under a reduced security protocol compared to typical protection for past presidents and major party nominees.

The Secret Service has disputed the claims, stating after the incident that assertions of requests for additional security being denied are “absolutely false”[4]. In a statement, the agency said it “execute[s] a comprehensive and layered strategy to balance personnel, technology, and specialized operational needs” in the dynamic threat environment.

The revelations come amidst heightened concerns over security lapses at Trump rallies. The Secret Service had previously advised against open-air events due to the higher risks compared to more controlled settings. Additionally, there have been ongoing worries about potential threats from Iran targeting former Trump officials.

The attempted assassination has prompted an independent review announced by President Biden, which the Secret Service has pledged to fully participate in. The agency is working with federal, state, and local authorities to investigate the shooting and prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the 2024 Republican National Convention approaches in Milwaukee, the Secret Service has stated it is confident in the security plan in place, which will be continuously adapted as necessary to ensure the highest level of safety for attendees. Additional enhancements have also been made to Trump’s security detail since the attack.

The Secret Service maintains it is committed to fulfilling its mission of protecting current and former leaders of American democracy. However, the report of repeated denials of security requests raises serious questions about potential vulnerabilities in the agency’s protective measures leading up to the assassination attempt on the former president.
