Significance of Sawan

Sawan is a significant month in the Hindu calendar, as it is associated with the following events:

  • During the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), the deadly poison Halahala emerged, which Lord Shiva drank to save the universe.
  • The deities and demons started offering holy Ganga water to Lord Shiva to reduce the harmful effects of the poison.
  • It is believed that Lord Shiva resides on Earth during this month and blesses his devotees.
  • Shiva puja, Jal Abhishek, and other rituals are performed with great fervor during Sawan.
